Tegan and Sara is a Canadian indie band consisting of the twins Tegan Rain Quin and Sara Keirsten Quin (born September 19, 1980 in Calgary , Alberta ).

Band history

Tegan and Sara Quin were born identical twins in Calgary on September 19, 1980 . When they were 15 years old, they started playing guitar and keyboard and writing songs.

During their high school years they founded the punk band Plunk , with whom they recorded their first demo tapes , including Red Tape , and sold them at their high school. Two songs from the demo Red Tape were later released on their first album, Under Feet Like Ours . The album was initially released under the band name "Sara and Tegan" , later they changed the name to "Tegan and Sara" , as this name is easier to speak and clearly different from the then successful artists such as Sarah McLachlan and Sarah Slean.

They achieved a breakthrough when Neil Young noticed them in 2000 and signed them. At the same time, various of her songs were used in American series such as Grey's Anatomy and The L Word .

In 2002 they released their third album If It Was You . Her fourth album So Jealous was released in 2004. Both albums were released on the record labels Vapor and Sanctuary . The track Walking with a Ghost was covered by The White Stripes .

In 2007 the album The Con was released by the record companies Vapor and Sire , as Sanctuary refrained from further releases in the USA . The Con and So Jealous were awarded a gold record for every 50,000 copies sold in Canada in February 2009 by the CRIA, the Canadian music industry interest group .

The sixth studio album Sainthood was released in 2009. The album reflects stories, experiences and essays that the band experienced during their tour in the USA and Australia in autumn 2008 . Sainthood has been sold over 40,000 times in Canada and has been awarded a gold record.

NOFX dedicated the song "Creeping Out Sara" to the sisters.

In November 2011 the live CD / DVD Get Along was released. Get Along was nominated for a Grammy in the “Best Long Music Video” category.

On January 29, 2013, the album Heartthrob was released in the US and Canada. The album was also available in Germany since February 8th. In the early autumn of 2013, the group had an extensive tour of England together with Waxahatchee . In Canada, Heartthrob was awarded a gold record for over 40,000 copies sold.

In October 2017, Tegan and Sara celebrated the ten-year anniversary of their album The Con with an unusual project: fourteen very different musicians each covered a song on the album. All proceeds from The Con X: Covers went entirely to the Tegan and Sara Foundation, which works for "economic justice, health and the representation of LGBTQ girls and women".

Private life

Both are openly gay. Tegan lives in Vancouver and Los Angeles, and Sara lives in Los Angeles with her friend Stacy Reader.
