Sarah McLachlan
Sarah Ann McLachlan , OC , OBC , [ ˈsɛɹə æn məˈklɑːklən ] (born January 28, 1968 in Halifax, Nova Scotia ) is a Canadian singer-songwriter .
Life
McLachlan was adopted as a child. At the age of 17 she played with the new wave band October Game . In 1988 she signed a recording deal with the independent label Nettwerk . She then moved to Vancouver where she recorded her first record, Touch . Her next album, Solace , brought her her commercial breakthrough in 1991 in her Canadian homeland.
During her career, Sarah McLachlan has sold over 25 million albums and won three Grammys . She is the initiator of Lilith Fair , a traveling music festival that gave over 100 concerts in Canada and the USA from 1997 to 1999, with exclusively female artists (in addition to McLachlan, Meredith Brooks , Sheryl Crow , Emmylou Harris , Dar Williams or Suzanne Vega ) were on stage. Part of the income (over $ 500,000 in total) was donated to local women's projects. It had its biggest appearance with more than one billion viewers around the world during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games on February 12, 2010 at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver. She sang her song "Ordinary Miracle".
McLachlan was married to the musician Ashwin Sood from 1997 to 2008, with whom she has two daughters (born in 2002 and 2007).
On June 15, 2011, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from Simon Fraser University .
