The Order of British Columbia, which replaced the former Order of the Dogwood , is intended to recognize current or former long-time residents of British Columbia who have distinguished themselves through a high level of achievement and success in a particular area for the benefit of the residents of British Columbia to have. Persons who are currently elected or appointed members of a public corporation are excluded. There are no restrictions on the number of nominations that can be made each year.

The nomination process to find suitable people begins with proposals from the public to the Advisory Board of the Order of British Columbia. The Advisory Board consists of the President of the Provincial Supreme Court, who takes the chair, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly , alternately one of the Presidents of the two state universities, the President of the Municipal Association, the Vice Minister for External Relations and two members of the Order. The advisory board meets once a year to submit proposals to the lieutenant governor. Posthumous nominations are not permitted, but a deceased person can be accepted if their name has been proposed to the advisory board beforehand. The Vice-Governor, who is ex officio member and Chancellor of the Council of the Order, announces the appointment with an instruction that is sealed with the Great Seal of the Province. The new order members then have the right to append the abbreviation OBC to their name.

After joining the Order, members will receive the Order's insignia in a ceremony at Government House in Victoria . The main emblem of the order is a gold medallion in the shape of a stylized dogwood flower, the official flower of the province. The face is made of white enamel with a gold border and shows in the middle the shield of the coat of arms of British Columbia , surrounded by the Edwardian crown as a symbol of the role of the Canadian monarch as a source of honor. The ribbon consists of vertical stripes in green, white, blue and gold, which correspond to the colors of the province's coat of arms. Men wear the medal attached to the collar at the end of the ribbon, women wear it on a bow on the left breast. For less formal occasions, members receive a pin.
