The Order of Ontario is an Order of Civil Service in the Canadian province of Ontario . The award was introduced in 1986 and is given to civilians who have stood out for their special achievements. No more than 24 people are awarded this medal each year. The lieutenant governor receives it automatically when he is sworn in and is also the chancellor of the order during his term of office.

Structure and appointment

The Order of Ontario is designed to recognize current or former senior residents of Ontario who have demonstrated a high level of achievement and success in a particular area and have thereby been of benefit to Ontario society and elsewhere. There are no restrictions on the maximum number of medal winners, but no more than 24 people can be honored per year. Canadian citizenship is not a requirement; However, persons who are currently elected or appointed members of a public corporation are excluded.

The nomination process to find suitable people begins with proposals from the public to the Secretariat for Honors and Awards of the Province. This consists of the President of the Supreme Court of Ontario (who is also Chairman), the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly , the Secretary of the Cabinet and up to six members of the Order. The committee meets once or twice a year and makes a preselection. It then selects, in collaboration with the cabinet, those people to be recommended to the lieutenant governor. Posthumous nominations are not permitted, but a deceased person can be honored if their name has already been proposed to the Secretariat for Honors and Awards. The Vice-Governor, who is ex officio a member and Chancellor of the Order's Advisory Council, announces the appointment with an instruction that is sealed with the Great Seal of the Province. The new order members then have the right to add the abbreviation OOnt to their name.

After admission to the order, the members receive the insignia of the order. The main emblem of the order is a gold medallion in the shape of a large-flowered forest lily , the official flower of the province. The face is made of white enamel with a gold border and bears the coat of arms of the coat of arms of Ontario in the middle , surmounted by the Edwardian crown as a symbol of the role of the Canadian monarch as a source of honor. The recipient's name is engraved on the back, along with the date of the honor. The ribbon consists of vertical stripes in red, green, white and gold, which correspond to the colors of the province's coat of arms. Men wear the medal attached to the collar at the end of the ribbon, women wear it on a bow on the left breast. For less formal occasions, members receive two pins and an official certificate.
