The Order of New Brunswick (French Ordre du Nouveau-Brunswick ) is a civilian merit order in the Canadian province of New Brunswick . The award was introduced in December 2000 and is given to civilians who have stood out for their special achievements. No more than ten people are awarded this medal each year. The lieutenant governor receives it automatically when he is sworn in and is also the chancellor of the order during his term of office.

Structure and appointment

The Order of New Brunswick is intended to recognize current or former long-time residents of New Brunswick who have distinguished themselves in a particular area through a high level of achievement and success and thereby made an outstanding contribution to the social, cultural or economic well-being of the province and its residents have done. There are no restrictions on the maximum number of medal winners, but no more than ten people can be honored per year. Canadian citizenship is required; Persons who are currently elected or appointed members of a public corporation are excluded.

The nomination process, with which suitable people are to be found, begins with proposals from the public to the religious council. This consists of the President of the Provincial Supreme Court, the Government Secretary and the President of one of the state universities, as well as three to five members of the Order, one of whom is the Chair. The Advisory Board meets at least once a year and makes recommendations to the Vice Governor. Posthumous nominations are not permitted, but a deceased person can be accepted if their name has been proposed to the advisory board beforehand. The Vice-Governor, who is ex officio member and Chancellor of the Advisory Council, announces the appointment with an instruction that is sealed with the Great Seal of the Province. The new order members then have the right to append the abbreviation ONB to their name.

insignia

After membership of the Order, members are presented with the Order's insignia in a ceremony at Government House in Fredericton . The main emblem of the order is a gold medallion in the shape of a stylized violet , more precisely Viola cucullata , the official flower of the province. The face is made of purple enamel with a gold border and bears the shield of the coat of arms of New Brunswick in the middle , surmounted by the Edwardian crown as a symbol of the role of the Canadian monarch as a source of honor. The ribbon consists of vertical stripes in blue, red and gold. Men wear the medal attached to the collar at the end of the ribbon, women wear it on a bow on the left breast. For less formal occasions, members receive a pin.
