Fredericton is the capital of the Atlantic Province of New Brunswick in eastern Canada and of York County . With 56,224 inhabitants in 2011 and 105,688 inhabitants in the greater Fredericton area, it is the third largest city in the province. Fredericton is home to two universities. The city is named after Frederick Augustus, Duke of York and Albany the second son George III.
Location and climate
The city is located approximately 90 km northwest of Saint John and approximately 150 km southwest of Moncton . The city is divided by the Saint John River . With Oromocto there is another larger city about 20 km away.

In Fredericton there are several basic - (Elementary) and secondary schools ( high schools ). Of the three public high schools, two are taught in English and the third predominantly in French. Fredericton High School , founded in 1785 and once one of the largest schools in the Commonwealth of Nations , is mostly attended by students who live in the southern part of the city. The high school has several sports teams in basketball , hockey , soccer, and American football .
The Leo Hayes High School , which opened in 1999, is visited mainly by students who live in the northern city. The school is run by a private provider, but through a state partnership. The main focus of the school's teaching is on the arts, sports and general education.
There are also four middle schools and fourteen elementary schools in the city area.
Universities and research
There are several colleges in the city: the University of New Brunswick , St. Thomas University, and the University of Fredericton . The University of New Brunswick was founded in 1785 and, along with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is one of the oldest universities in North America. The St. Thomas University is the only Catholic university in New Brunswick. It was founded in 1964 and offers courses in journalism , criminology , gerontology and social sciences . The university is also a leader in 2D and 3D graphics animation techniques.
Research institutions
Fredericton is home to several major agricultural , forestry and engineering research facilities . The The Hugh John Flemming Forestry Center (incl. The municipal and provincial research institutions) is home to the biggest and leading research center in central Canada. The research center cooperates with the University of New Brunswick.
Due to the growing IT sector, a research branch was established. In 2002 the National Research Council of Canada Institute for Information Technology - e-Business facility opened , which is located on the campus of the University of New Brunswick.

Several print media appear in Fredericton. The largest daily newspaper is the Daily Gleaner with a circulation of 16,000 copies daily. The Telegraph Journal is headquartered in Saint John , but operates a special edition for Fredericton and has an office in town.
There are no regional television stations in Fredericton. These are located in the larger city of Saint John. Shootout 2018
A gunman killed four people, including two police officers, in Fredericton on August 10, 2018. The alleged perpetrator was seriously injured and hospitalized. The shooter was charged with four murders.
