Walter Allison Hurley

Walter Allison Hurley (born May 30, 1937 in Fredericton ) is an American clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of Grand Rapids .

Life

The Archbishop of Detroit , John Francis Dearden , ordained him on June 5, 1965 .

John Paul II named him auxiliary bishop in Detroit and titular bishop of Chunavia on July 7, 2003 . The Archbishop of Detroit, Adam Joseph Cardinal Maida , donated him episcopal ordination on August 12 of the same year; Co-consecrators were Edmund Casimir Cardinal Szoka , Governor of the Vatican City and President of the Pontifical Commission for the State of the Vatican City , and Walter Joseph Schoenherr , Auxiliary Bishop in Detroit.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Bishop of Grand Rapids on June 21, 2005 , and on August 4 of the same year, Hurley was introduced to the office.

On April 18, 2013, Pope Francis accepted Hurley's retirement, which had been submitted for reasons of age. From October 17, 2018 to July 26, 2019, he administered the vacant Diocese of Saginaw as Apostolic Administrator .
