The Archdiocese of Detroit ( Latin : Archidioecesis Detroitensis ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church based in Detroit (USA). The archbishopric includes the areas of Lapeer County , Macomb County , Monroe County , Oakland County , St. Clair County, and Wayne County .

history

The archbishopric was detached on March 8, 1833 from the diocese of Cincinnati and then included Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota and the areas of Dakota east of the Mississippi River. As early as November 28, 1843, the Diocese of Milwaukee was separated from him. Further territorial losses brought the founding of the Vicariate Apostolic Upper Michigan on July 29, 1853, the Diocese of Grand Rapids , on May 19, 1882 and the Diocese of Lansing , on May 22, 1937. All these dioceses were completely removed from the Diocese of Detroit. At the same time, however, on May 22, 1937, Detroit was elevated to the status of a metropolitan archbishopric of the ecclesiastical province of Detroit, which today includes the dioceses of Gaylord , Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo , Lansing and Saginaw . To establish the latter, the diocese gave up some areas again on February 26, 1938.

Sexual abuse

In the archbishopric there was the aid organization Opus Bono Sacerdotii , which served to support priests who were suspected of being abused . In 2017, public prosecution investigations led to the resignation of his entire board. In July 2019, the co-founder of Opus Bono Sacerdotii , Eduard Perrone , was suspended as a priest of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary parish in Detroit following allegations of abuse . In 2019 the Archdiocese published a list of priests who were "credibly accused of sexual assault".
