The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis ( lat. : Archidioecesis Paulopolitana et Minneapolitana , Engl. : Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis ) is a in the State of Minnesota situated Roman Catholic Archdiocese .

The archbishopric was founded on July 19, 1850 from areas of the Diocese of Dubuque and the Diocese of Milwaukee as the Diocese of Saint Paul. The ecclesiastical province of Saint Louis belonging, it moved over Milwaukee on February 12, 1875 to form the ecclesiastical province. At the same time the Vicariate Apostolic North Minnesota was removed from him. Furthermore, the Apostolic Vicariate Dakota was removed from the young diocese on August 12, 1879, and the Winona diocese on November 26, 1889 . After Saint Paul was promoted to archbishopric on May 4, 1888, there were Becker, Beltrami, Clay, Clearwater, Hubbard, Kittson, Marshall, Mahnomen, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake, and Rosseau counties on December 31, 1909 to establish the diocese of Crookston .
1950 still counting 335,880 Catholics (23.9%) in 309 parishes with 475 diocesan priests , 82 religious priests and 1,976 religious sisters, the diocese of New Ulm was removed from the archbishopric on November 18, 1957 , so that it still counts 17,225 km² to this day.
The archbishopric, whose ecclesiastical province includes the dioceses of Bismarck , Crookston, Duluth , Fargo , New Ulm, Rapid City , Saint Cloud , Sioux Falls and Winona, changed its name from Saint Paul to Saint Paul and Minneapolis on July 11, 1966 .
In addition to the Cathedral of Saint Paul in Saint Paul (Minnesota) , the Bishopric also includes the Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis .
In November 2014, the Archdiocese considered bankruptcy proceedings to meet claims for damages from victims of abuse . As a result of the resulting disputes, Archbishop John Clayton Nienstedt and Auxiliary Bishop and Vicar General Lee Anthony Piché offered their resignation, which Pope Francis accepted on June 15, 2015. For the duration of Sedisvakanz he appointed Bernard Hebda the apostolic administrator of the archdiocese.
On June 1, 2018, the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis agreed with around 450 victims of sexual abuse by 91 priests in the diocese over the past few decades on a payment of 210 million US dollars from a fund. At the same time, the bankruptcy proceedings of the archbishopric, threatened by bankruptcy, are to be financed.
