The Archdiocese of San Antonio ( Latin : Archidioecesis Sancti Antonii ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church based in San Antonio , Texas , USA .

history

The Diocese of San Antonio was detached from the Diocese of Galveston as an independent diocese on August 28, 1874 . Belonging to the Archdiocese of New Orleans as an ecclesiastical province, there were some areas for the new Diocese of El Paso on March 3, 1914, and on August 3, 1926 to establish the Diocese of Amarillo . On August 3, 1926, San Antonio was simultaneously raised to the archbishopric, whose ecclesiastical province today includes the dioceses of Dallas , Fort Worth , Laredo , Lubbock and the diocese of San Angelo . On November 15, 1947 there were further areas from the new diocese of Austin , so that in 1950 there were 259,908 (35.8%) Catholics in 106 parishes with 133 diocesan priests , 174 religious priests and 1,070 religious sisters . After an area surrender to the new diocese of Victoria in Texas on April 13, 1982 and the areas of Maverick, Zavala, Dimmit and half of La Salle County to the new diocese of Laredo again on July 3, 2000 , the number in 2003 was 644,357 (32.9%) Catholics on 72,081 km² in 139 parishes with 155 diocesan and 196 religious priests, 312 deacons and 834 religious sisters.
