The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Dubuque ( lat. : Archidioecesis Dubuquensis ) is in the United States located diocese of the Roman Catholic Church based in Dubuque (Iowa) .

history

The Archdiocese of Dubuque was separated from the Diocese of Saint Louis on July 28, 1837 and established as an independent diocese. Subordinate to the Archdiocese of Baltimore as a suffragan diocese, it passed on July 20, 1847 into the ecclesiastical province of Saint Louis, now elevated to the Archbishopric. On July 19, 1850 it gave together with Saint Louis from some areas to establish the diocese of Saint Paul . After it had given up some areas again on June 14, 1881 to establish the Davenport diocese , it was raised to an archbishopric with a metropolitan seat on June 15, 1893 itself . On January 15, 1902, the archbishopric ceded areas to establish a new diocese ( Sioux City ).
