The Roman Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City ( Latin Dioecesis Civitatis Lacus Salsi , English Diocese of Salt Lake City ) is in the United States located Roman Catholic diocese , based in Salt Lake City , Utah .

The Diocese of Salt Lake City was founded in 1887 by Pope Leo XIII. Established from the cession of territory by the Archdiocese of San Francisco as the Apostolic Vicariate of Utah . The Apostolic Vicariate of Utah was on January 27, 1891 by Leo XIII. raised to the diocese and renamed the diocese of Salt Lake . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of San Francisco as a suffragan . On March 27, 1931, the Diocese of Salt Lake gave parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Reno-Las Vegas . The Diocese of Salt Lake was renamed the Diocese of Salt Lake City on March 31, 1951 .
