The Archdiocese of Santa Fe ( lat. : Archidioecesis Sanctae Fidei in America Septentrionali ; Administrative abbreviation SFE ) is a in the United States located Roman Catholic diocese , based in Albuquerque , New Mexico .

history

The Archdiocese of Santa Fe was on July 23, 1850 by Pope Pius IX. founded as the diocese of Santa Fe out of the archbishopric of Saint Louis . In 1868 territories were ceded to establish the Apostolic Vicariate of Arizona and the Apostolic Vicariate of Colorado and Utah . On February 12, 1875 the elevation to the archbishopric took place. In 1939 the bishopric of Gallup and 1982 the bishopric of Las Cruces was founded from assignments .

In December 2018, the Archdiocese filed for bankruptcy because it could no longer make compensation payments to victims of sexual abuse by its priests.

The archbishopric is a metropolitan seat and belongs to Region XIII (AZ, CO, NM, UT, WY) of the Bishops' Conference of the United States . Subordinate suffragan dioceses are the dioceses of Gallup , Las Cruces , Phoenix and Tucson .
