The diocese of Belleville ( Latin Dioecesis Bellevillensis , English Diocese of Belleville ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church and is located in the US state of Illinois , the episcopal seat is the city of the same name . The diocese was separated from the then diocese of Alton and established on January 7, 1887. It is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Chicago . The first bishop of Belleville was John Janssen from Germany .
