Henry J. Althoff

Henry J. Althoff (born August 28, 1873 in Aviston , Clinton County , Illinois , United States , † July 3, 1947 ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of Belleville .

Life

Henry J. Althoff received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Belleville on July 26, 1902 .

Pope Pius X appointed him Bishop of Belleville on December 4, 1913. The Archbishop of Chicago , James Edward Quigley , ordained him episcopal on February 24 of the next year ; Co- consecrators were Bishop of Rockford , Peter James Muldoon , and Auxiliary Bishop Paul Peter Rhode of Chicago.

He became known, among other things, for banning games of chance and lotteries to finance the work of the church and for calling on believers to make direct donations instead of community festivals. On April 15, 1939, Pope Pius XII appointed him . to the papal assistant throne .
