- 1955: 14-year-old black Emmett Till is mistreated and murdered by Roy Bryant and JW Millam for allegedly whistling after a white woman. The later acquittal of the perpetrators leads to mass protests, which are considered to be the beginning of the US civil rights movement .
- 1984: The Amstetten criminal case begins. The perpetrator lures his daughter into the basement and keeps her captive for more than 24 years for sexual reasons.

- 1973: Around 1200 people die in a severe earthquake in the Mexican states of Puebla, Veracruz and Oaxaca.
- 1988: Ramstein air conference disaster : Three jets of the Italian aerobatic squadron Frecce Tricolori collide during an air show at Ramstein Air Base . While two of the jets hit the runway area, a machine crashed into the crowd. Of the more than 300,000 spectators, 31 die immediately, followed by 39 more; over 500 are injured.
