Janet Elizabeth Evans (born August 28, 1971 in Plancentia , California ) is a former American swimmer .

Career

In 1987 she celebrated her first major successes when she broke the world records in the 400 m, 800 m and 1500 m freestyle .

1988 Olympic Games

At the Olympic Games in Seoul a year later , she won three gold medals . She was Olympic champion in the 400 m and 800 m freestyle as well as the 400 m medley . At these games, she set a world record over 400 m freestyle, which lasted until May 2006; her world record in the 1500 m freestyle lasted until June 2007. Her world record in the 800 m freestyle was only improved by Rebecca Adlington at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing .

From 1987 to 1990 she was voted swimmer of the year four times in a row .

Olympic Games 1992

At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , she was Olympic champion in the 800 m freestyle and also won silver in the 400 m freestyle. At the World Championships in 1991 and 1994 she won the 800 m freestyle title.

In 1996 she ended her career. At the domestic Olympic Games in Atlanta she was unable to win a medal, but at the opening ceremony, she brought Muhammad Ali the torch with which he lit the Olympic flame. During her career, she had won five Olympic medals and 45 national titles. These are the second most popular swimming titles behind Tracy Caulkins . In 2001 she was inducted into the International Swimming Sports Hall of Fame .

She has been married since 2004 and has lived with her husband and two children in Laguna Beach (California) since 2012 .

In 2011, Janet Evans started a comeback attempt with a view to possible participation in the 2012 London Olympics.
