Ulrike Tauber (born June 16, 1958 in Karl-Marx-Stadt ) is a former German swimmer who competed for the GDR .

Career

She celebrated her first major success by winning gold medals at the 1974 European Championships in Vienna over 200 meters and 400 meters of individual medley courses . She also won silver over 100 meters and 200 meters back . Her next successes were the world championship title in the 400 meter medley at the 1975 World Championships in Cali and victory at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal over the same distance. She also won the silver medal over the 200 meter butterfly distance at these summer games. The following year she was able to defend both titles over the two individual medley courses at the European Championships in Jönköping in 1977 .

At the World Swimming Championships in 1978 in West Berlin , she could not defend her title in the 400 meter medley, where she only had to admit defeat to the American Tracy Caulkins and won the silver medal. She was third in the 200 meter medley.

After the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , where she could no longer win a medal, she resigned from competitive sports and became a doctor. In 1988 she was inducted into the international swimming pool 's hall of fame . In 1976 she was awarded the Silver Patriotic Order of Merit . She was a world swimmer in 1974 and 1977. Both awards were withdrawn in 2013.

GDR doping

In the course of the GDR doping process and the related investigations and archival processing of the doping practices of GDR doctors and sports officials , among other things, doping plan specifications were found by Ulrike Tauber. A medical doping program as well as a subsequent recovery therapy was developed for Tauber. She is also one of those athletes who admit that she is doping complicit. Tauber was stripped of her award as “ World Swimmer of the Year ” by the US magazine “Swimming World”.
