Bianka Minte-King
Bianka Minte-König (born July 28, 1947 in Berlin ) is a German writer and professor of literature, media and theater education .
Life
Born in Berlin as the daughter of a bookseller, Bianka Minte-König lives in Braunschweig - Riddagshausen and on the island of Mallorca . She is married and has two children, a daughter born in 1983 and a son born in 1990.
Minte-König studied literature, journalism and education at the Ruhr University in Bochum . She completed her studies in 1974 with a Magistra Artium (MA) in pedagogy with a thesis on children's television. In 1975 she received her doctorate in literary studies and its didactics .
After completing her studies, she initially worked as a research assistant at the Adolf Grimme Institute for Media Research of the German Adult Education Association (VHS Association), where she supervised two research projects of the VHS Association in cooperation with ZDF and NDR . During her time at the institute, she worked in scientific publications a. a. "With media and communication theory questions" and wrote "extensive lexicon and manual contributions". At the age of 28, she moved to the Braunschweig / Wolfenbüttel University of Applied Sciences in 1975 , where she has been teaching literature, media and theater education as a university teacher in the social affairs department since 1980 . It “deals with communication science issues in these teaching areas in theory, research and practice”. She also worked for three years as the university 's women's representative , for a long period as a member of the faculty council and for six years (1995–2001) as dean of her faculty. In her function as women's representative, she campaigned “especially for the promotion of girls in natural science and technology courses as well as for the appointment of women in technical fields”.
In Riddagshausen, an old barn was converted into a cultural center for children ( KinderMedienScheune ) under Minte-König's direction , which includes a gallery for children's and picture book illustrators ( KinderMedienGalerie ), a specialist and research library for picture books ( BraunschweigerBilderBuchArchiv ) and an institute for research and planning of children's media and for the mediation of readings by authors ( KinderMedienInstitut ). At the same time, Minte-König directed the children's theater Fabula for ten years and wrote plays for it. She has also organized writing workshops where women and girls could learn and try out autobiographical writing. The Braunschweig picture book exhibition and the Eulenspiegel picture book prize of the city of Schöppenstedt also emerged “from their work and through their initiative” .
Literary career
Bianka Minte-König began writing books for children and young people in 1996 at the age of 49, some of which were translated into up to 22 languages and became bestsellers. In Germany, a good 1.7 million copies of her youth books had been sold by the beginning of 2009 - including more than 1.2 million books in the Freche Mädchen series, launched in 1998 alone, with around 20 titles - around half a million abroad.
Some of the titles in the Naughty Girls' books written by Minte-König were set to music as audio books or radio plays - some of them with her daughter Gwyneth Minte as the speaker . In addition, there are other publications within the book series Love & Secret (seven titles) and in the narrative children's non-fiction book series Komm mit (approx. Ten titles).
Since July 2007, she has also had a number of novels for young women written by her daughter Gwyneth Minte . At about the same time, four of her Naughty Girls books were filmed for the cinema as well as the first volume of a new manga series Naughty Girls - Naughty Manga! released.
reception
The perception by literary criticism has so far been rather sporadic and focuses primarily on the successful and high-turnover youth book series by Bianka Minte-König - the author's assessment therefore goes hand in hand with the consideration of a genre she has played a leading role in. According to this, the genre “newer girlie literature” is valued very little overall, despite its popularity with the target audience and the resulting sales success.
In 2003, Hans-Heino Ewers introduced the "newer girlie literature" in a main seminar with a focus on children's and youth literature at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, with special mention of Bianca Minte-König with the note: "Superfluous to emphasize that this format, so little valued by research and criticism, is extremely popular with the target group. "
Florian Felix Weyh comments on Deutschlandfunk on the series of girls' books with glittering covers and stickers as a sign of a publishing competition, "who can make the young readers even better as a native tribe with glass beads". The following comment is made about the author: “Minte-König writes with a mallet.” Her series “Love and Secret” would also have “managed the mercantile feat of putting pure booklet novels - esoteric nonsense plus tortured kitsch romance - into the program of an otherwise respected youth book publisher.” And that the author teaches media and literature pedagogy as her main occupation, "makes one tremble gently - and hope that her supposed Jekyll & Hyde existence strictly separates the personalities."
Two other voices, on the other hand, justify the author's success with the proximity to her intended target group.
The “Reading Forum Bavaria” of the State Institute for School Quality and Educational Research (ISB) admits to the author when reviewing one of her serial girl books that she “moves very close to the mentality and the fragile feelings of young people” and, with her language, “the youth -Slang quite exactly " hit.
The film adaptation of Naughty Girls, based on several books from the girl series by Bianca Minte-König, is also well received by the Oberösterreichische Nachrichten , when it ends its criticism with the comment: “A harmless, happy teenage comedy that lives exclusively through looks at the adolescent but shrewd eyes of the "cheeky girls".
