Jönköping ( ˈjœnɕøːpiŋ ]) is a town in the northwest of the historic Swedish province of Småland . It is the capital of the Jönköping County and the municipality of Jönköping .

history
Jönköping is an old trading center that was granted city rights on May 18, 1284. The city was the seat of several Swedish diets , including that of 1599. In its role as a royal seat , it was strongly fortified at the beginning of the 17th century and assumed an important role as an administrative center for large parts of southern Sweden. The construction of a sewer system also falls during this time. In 1612 the city was burned down by the Swedes in order not to give shelter to the advancing Danes.
In Jönköping the peace treaty was signed on December 10, 1809 after the Danish-Swedish War 1808–1809 .
Jönköping is also an old industrial town and was internationally known for its match industry (Swedish sticks , säkerhetständstickor ). The world-leading company Svenska Tändsticks AB (STAB), now Swedish Match , was based here until 1970.
Due to its role as a residential and industrial city, Jönköping is now classified as a Swedish Imperial Interest.
Events
The DreamHack takes place twice a year at the local Elmia exhibition center . Before The Gathering in Norway, it is the largest LAN party in the world.
Sports
The HV 71 Jönköping ice hockey club is based in the city , as is the Jönköpings Södra IF football club and IK Hakarpspojkarna , which is best known for its four successes in the Tiomila orienteering competition .
In 1977 the European Swimming Championships with water polo and diving took place here. At the 2011 men's handball world championship , nine main round games were played in the Kinnarps Arena . 2016 found in the district of Huskvarna , the mountain bike European Championships of UEC instead.
Attractions
In addition to the city park with its open-air museum , the matchstick museum and the factory museum of the Husqvarna AB company are worth a visit. Another park is the small Rådhusparken in the city center . The 72 meter high tower of the Sophiakirche can be seen from afar .
In nearby Riddersberg is the open-air museum of the Swedish sculptor and wood artist Calle Örnemark .
economy
Jönköping is a center of forestry and agriculture . Electrical and household appliances are manufactured in the industrial suburb of Huskvarna . Due to its central location between Stockholm , Gothenburg and Malmö , Jönköping is also an important hub and logistics center, so many large companies have set up a warehouse here.
education and Science
The Jönköping University (Swed. Högskolan i Jönköping ) has around 12,000 students. The private endowed university has the right to award doctorates and habilitation degrees for some subjects. The institution is made up of four universities of applied sciences (Swedish: fackhögskolor ) with a focus on economics, engineering, health and communication and education. The economics faculty, the Jönköping International Business School (JIBS), is particularly well-known internationally.
