Karl Svensson (born March 21, 1984 in Jönköping ) is a Swedish football player . The defender , who was under contract in Scotland and France, took part in the 2006 World Cup with the Swedish national team.

Career

Career start in Sweden

Svensson began his football career at Egnahems BK . In 2000 he moved to the youth of the multi-year first division club Jönköpings Södra IF . At the club from Småland , the central defender soon made his debut in the men's team, which competed in the third-class division 2 Östra Götaland . With her he regularly occupied places in the midfield of the league.

Svensson's talent was also discovered in a higher class. Before the first division season in 2003 , the defender joined the traditional Swedish club IFK Göteborg in the Allsvenskan . At first he was only a substitute player and was mainly used as a substitute, as coach Johansson mainly relied on the defensive line around Mikael Antonsson , Dennis Jonsson , Hjálmar Jónsson and Magnus Erlingmark . From his second year at the club, he was able to establish himself for long periods in the club's starting lineup. As a result, Torbjörn Nilsson , the coach of the Swedish U-21 team , included him in the junior national team. Even after Jörgen Lennartsson and Tommy Söderberg took over the team in 2005, he was one of the regulars, but moved up behind his Gothenburg team- mates Mattias Bjärsmyr and Oscar Wendt .

With the club team reached Svensson in the 2005 season, the best result of his young career. Meanwhile promoted to team captain, he led the club four points behind the Stockholm club Djurgårdens IF in second place in the table. Due to his good performances over the course of the season he had also played his way into the notebook of national coach Lars Lagerbäck and made his debut in the national jersey at the beginning of the following year. In an international tour in the Arab region, he was in the starting line-up on January 18 of that year in a 1-1 draw against the Saudi Arabian national team with goals from Anders Svensson and Mohammed Haidar . Without having played another international match, he was a substitute for the established defenders Olof Mellberg , Teddy Lučić and Petter Hansson in the squad for the World Cup in Germany in the summer , but was not used there.

Change abroad

Shortly before the start of the world championship tournament, the Scottish top club Glasgow Rangers announced the commitment of Svensson. He signed a three-year contract with the newly signed French coach Paul Le Guen from the Ibrox Stadium . Under the French, he was at the side of Julien Rodriguez initially one of the main forces in the defense chain. Even after Le Guen was replaced by Walter Smith in early January , he kept his regular seat until the end of the month. At the end of the winter transfer period, however, the club signed two defensive players, Ugo Ehiogu and David Weir , who subsequently ousted the Swede from the team.

At the beginning of the Allsvenskan season 2007 in April of the year IFK Gothenburg tried to get Svensson back. However, this refused a loan deal with the Swedish club because he wanted to assert himself with the Rangers. Until the end of the season, however, he was unable to defend himself against the competition in the defensive line and after his last game on February 18 in a 2-1 win over FC Falkirk , in which he was allowed to play one half, he did not play for the Club.

In the summer of the year Svensson left Rangers for Ligue 1 after 21 games in the Scottish Premier League . At the end of July he signed a three-year contract with the French first division promoted SM Caen , who paid a € 1 million transfer fee . At the beginning of the 2007/08 Ligue 1 season he was one of the regular players before injuring his knee on matchday three in August. He then fell out for a long time due to a back injury and after his recovery did not really take a step at the northern French club, as he could not displace the seeded defenders Nicolas Seube , Jérémy Sorbon and Cédric Hengbart .

Return to Sweden

In February 2009 Svensson left the French club, where he had come to a game in the first half of the 2008/09 season , in the direction of Sweden. He signed a four-year contract with his old club IFK Göteborg. In preparation, however, the defender slowed down a fever . He then fell out due to injury until the summer. He played his first competitive game for the Gothenburg club on July 26th of that year when he was substituted on for Mikael Dyrestam in the 82nd minute defeat by Trelleborgs FF . Due to its susceptibility to injury, however, it was only used irregularly. After a good preparation for the 2010 season in the starting lineup at the beginning of the season, he lost his regular place after poor performance, so that he had to take a seat in the Allsvenskan on the one hand and on the other hand took the club's second substitute. While he was therefore associated with other clubs, he intensified his training at the club, because he felt comfortable with the club despite the circumstances and to offer himself to the coaching duo Stefan Rehn and Jonas Olsson . In the following season he managed to return to the team at times, in his 18 league appearances he was in the starting line-up in 15 games. Nevertheless, he wanted to change clubs a year before his contract expired.

Shortly before Christmas 2011, Svensson announced his move back to his first position in adult football, he signed a three-year contract with Jönköpings Södra IF. For the second division he played 53 of the possible 90 season games during his contract period. At the turn of the year 2014/15, the club and the players could not come to an agreement about a contract extension, so they parted ways.
