Mattias Bjärsmyr (born January 3, 1986 in Hestra ) is a Swedish football player . The defender , who made his debut for the Swedish national team in 2008 , won the national championship title in Sweden and Greece.

Career

Start of career and development to national player

Mattias Bjarsmyr

After Bjärsmyr started playing football in his hometown at Hestra SSK , the defender came to Husqvarna FF via Grimsås IF . In the third division he made his debut in the men's team in 2002. After three successful years for the young player in the club's defense, in which the team regularly only narrowly missed promotion to the Superettan , he was signed by IFK Göteborg in 2005.

In May 2005 Bjärsmyr made his debut in a 1-1 draw against IF Elfsborg with goals from Peter Ijeh and Daniel Alexandersson in the Allsvenskan when he came on for Hjálmar Jónsson at half-time . In the further course of the season he was able to earn a regular place in the defense under coach Arne Erlandsen and also made himself interesting for the Swedish U-21 national team . On August 17 of the year he made his debut in the 1-1 draw against the Czech youth national team in the junior national team, when he replaced Stefan Ålander in the second half . As a result, he was still part of the squad of the selection, but was initially unable to prevail against the regular formation of Stefan Ålander, Andreas Granqvist , Jonas Olsson and Fredrik Stenman in the defense.

In the following seasons Bjärsmyr was able to establish himself in both the starting line-up of the club and the junior national team. Even under the coaching duo Stefan Rehn and Jonas Olsson , who took over the support of the IFK team before the start of the 2007 season , he only missed one season game and contributed to winning the Lennart Johansson Cup for the Swedish champions with two goals this season . Thereupon he was nominated for the national team by Lars Lagerbäck . On January 13, 2008, he made his debut in the 1-0 victory over the Costa Rican national team on the occasion of a South American tour of the Swedish team in the national jersey and even took over the captain's armband in the second half of the game when the regular team captain Anders Svensson in the half-time break against Andreas Dahl was exchanged.

In the 2008 season Bjärsmyr was not used in all first division games due to a dismissal. He also reached the cup final with his club, which the team won against Kalmar FF on penalties . As a result, several international clubs such as RSC Anderlecht , FC Red Bull Salzburg and FC Copenhagen expressed interest in signing the defender. The player remained loyal to the club and reached first place in the table as a regular with the team during the summer break of the 2009 season . At the end of May, the supervisors of the Swedish U-21 team, Tommy Söderberg and Jörgen Lennartsson , appointed him alongside his club mates Gustav Svensson , Pontus Wernbloom and Robin Söder in the squad for the U-21 European Championship finals in their own country in the summer. With the team he reached the semifinals of the tournament.

Years abroad with title wins

From July 2009 Bjärsmyr was under contract with Panathinaikos Athens . The Greek club paid a transfer fee of 450,000 euros to IFK Göteborg. Initially a regular player, he moved into the second tier over the course of the season. Nevertheless, he contributed to winning the Greek championship in 16 games this season alongside players such as Djibril Cissé , Giorgos Karagounis , Konstantinos Katsouranis , Cédric Kanté , Sebastián Leto and Loukas Vyntra . In addition, the team won the national cup with a 1-0 final win over Aris Thessaloniki , although he was not part of the 18-man squad in the final.

Bjärsmyr was initially in the squad at the beginning of the following season, but was not used by double- winning coach Nikolaos Nioplias . Shortly before the end of the summer changeover period , however, he switched to Rosenborg Trondheim on loan to Norway for just under a year from August 2010 , and the agreement also provided for a purchase option. By the end of the season he played seven games in the Tippeligaen and thus contributed to defending the championship title. He also played all games in the group stage of the 2010/11 Europa League , but as the bottom of the group he was eliminated from the competition with the club prematurely. At the beginning of the 2011 season , the defender was part of the starting line-up before moving into the second line. In the summer, the club refrained from taking the purchase option.

Bjärsmyr returned to Panathinaikos in the summer of 2011 after the loan deal ended. In the meantime, the Portuguese Jesualdo Ferreira had taken over the coaching position, but he was only a substitute here at the beginning and was associated with another club change. From January 2012, however, he moved back to the team and played in nine championship games until March, after which he disappeared again from the starting lineup. In the summer, the club prematurely terminated the contract with the player.

Return to Sweden

After various trial training sessions in various European countries, Bjärsmyr joined his ex-club IFK Göteborg at the end of August 2012, where he signed a contract dated until the end of 2013. He quickly established himself as a regular in the team, with which he won the Swedish National Cup for the second time in his career in 2013. Two years later he led the team as team captain in the cup final, which was won against Örebro SK .

Change to Turkey

In the summer of 2017 Bjärsmyr moved to the Turkish Süper Lig for Sivasspor . After two years he moved within this league to the promoted Gençlerbirliği Ankara .

Return to IFK Göteborg

On June 13, 2020 Bjärsmyr moved back to his home country for IFK Göteborg . The first two games in the Allsvenskan he was not in the squad but on June 22, 2020 he made his comeback against Mjällby AIF (2: 2).
