Season course

On the 7th matchday, five teams were tied with 13 points each. Up until then there were six different leaders. Defending champion Rosenborg Trondheim made a false start. The team had only 1 point in their account after four games and were relegated at this point. Rosenborg recovered and was in 5th place after the first half of the season.

Molde FK took over the championship lead for the first time on matchday 12 and did not give up this after matchday 14. Chase Tromsø IL kept up for a long time and kept the gap to the front at six points. When Tromsø lost 2-0 at home to Molde on matchday 25, the first chaser was shaken off. On the 28th matchday, the second rival Rosenborg Trondheim lost 3: 6 at home against Brann Bergen . This decided the first championship around coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer . Tromsø IL was runner-up, five points behind. Another four points behind, defending champion Rosenborg Trondheim landed in third place.

With the start of Kristiansand , promoted Sarpsborg 08 FF also had to leave the Tippeligaen. Both teams were on the two relegation ranks from matchday 17. The two other promoted teams, Fredrikstad FK and Sogndal Fotball, were able to save themselves on the penultimate and third last matchday respectively.

The 9th matchday was from 22./23. May 2011 postponed to summer as the players went on strike. The 17th matchday on July 24, 2011 was postponed to late summer due to the terrorist attacks .
