The Hovedserien 1961/62 was the 18th season of the highest Norwegian football league and the 14th and final season under the name Hovedserien . The season began on July 30, 1961 and ended with the championship final on October 31, 1962.

The 16 teams played against each other in a group in a simple game round with a return game, so that each team played 30 games. The first eight teams qualified for the single-track 1st Divisjon starting next year. The last eight teams had to be relegated.
A special feature of this season was the length: the championship was held over a period of 15 months. The reason for this was the change in the playing time. Due to the climatic conditions, the winter break in Norway was always much longer (5–6 months) than the summer break (maximum 2 months). In order not to distort the competition too much, it was decided to run the season in one go from April to October / November, i.e. in one calendar year. This became more fair to the continuous performance of the teams. For this change, this season was extended by combining the teams from the two groups from the previous season and the four promoted teams in a single group and letting them all play against each other. In this way, equal opportunities were preserved, as there could be no easier or harder group.

The newcomer Brann Bergen became Norwegian champion for the first time.
In addition, with Frigg Oslo and Steinkjer IFK , two other promoted teams qualified for the 1st division. Only FK Ørn had to relegate.
For the European Champions Cup, however, Fredrikstad FK qualified because they were the leaders after the 21st matchday, which was still fitting for the start of the European Cup. Then there was a short break of four weeks from the game (which would have been the end of the normal season 1961/62). Otherwise Norway would not have been able to send a team into this competition in the 1962/63 season.
