The Hovedserien 1958/59 was the 15th season of the highest Norwegian football league and the eleventh season under the name Hovedserien . The season began on July 30, 1958 and ended with the second final game on August 5, 1959.

The 16 teams played against each other in two groups, each with eight teams, in a simple game round with a return game, so that each team played 14 games. The two last placed had to be relegated.

The champions had to be determined in two final games of the two group winners this season, as the first game ended in a draw after extra time and there was no decision on penalties at the time. It was curious that the second final game took place after the start of the 1959/60 season. Compared to the previous season, some of the groups have been redistributed.

Lillestrøm SK became Norwegian champion for the first time. For the first time after the introduction of a single final in the 1951/52 season, a championship final had to be repeated.

SK Freidig , Kapp IF and Årstad IL had to relegate from the newcomers . Only Greåker IF could stay in the Hovedserien .
