The 1. Divisjon 1983 was the 39th season of the highest Norwegian football league and the 21st season under the name 1. Divisjon . The regular season began on April 24, 1983 and ended on October 9, 1983.

The twelve teams played against each other in a simple game round with a return game, so that each team played 22 games. Champion was the leader after the last match day. The last two teams had to be relegated. The third from last had to go to a relegation round against the two runners-up in the 2nd division (group A and B).
season
Vålerengens IF became Norwegian champions for the third time.
As in the previous season, the performance of the teams was very even at the beginning. After nine match days, the gap between the first and the eighth was just four points. With another four wins in a row, Vålerengens IF then extended its lead to four points. In the further course the gap even increased to seven points after the 18th matchday. With two defeats in a row, the other teams still had a theoretical chance of winning the championship. Vålerengens IF then secured this with a draw on the penultimate matchday.
Of the promoters Brann Bergen , Eik IF and Kongsvinger IL , only Brann Bergen had to relegate.

Relegation
Strindheim IL was able to prevail in the relegation against the two runners-up of the 2nd Divisjon and rose. Brann Bergen had to relegate to the 2nd division, Pors remained second class.
