The 1. Divisjon 1976 was the 32nd season of the highest Norwegian football league and the 14th season under the name 1. Divisjon . The season began on April 25, 1976 and ended on October 17, 1976.

The twelve teams played against each other in a simple game round with a return game, so that each team played 22 games. Champion was the leader after the last match day. The last three teams had to be relegated.

Lillestrøm SK became Norwegian champion for the second time.

Lillestrøm SK took the lead on matchday 6. The lead was up to four points. Only after the 16th match day did it get tighter again. On matchday 19, Brann Bergen briefly took the lead. In the end, however, Lillestrøm managed to defend the one-point lead.

Of the promoters Bryne IL , Hamarkameratene and SK Vard only SK Vard had to relegate.

On the last day of the season presented in January Fuglset from Molde FK a new record: the 6: 1 victory of his team at Strømsgodset IF he scored all six goals. This record is still valid today (December 2009) in the top division.
