The 1. Divisjon 1988 was the 44th season of the highest Norwegian football league and the 26th season under the name 1. Divisjon . The season began on April 30, 1988 and ended on October 9, 1988.

Twelve teams played against each other in the league in a simple round-trip, so that each team played 22 games. The tenth-placed and third-last had to play relegation games against the two runners-up in the 2nd division (groups A and B) to stay in the league.

This season was the first time that points were awarded, which is also internationally valid: the winner received three points, in the event of a tie there was one point for both teams, in the event of a defeat there were no points.

season

Rosenborg Trondheim became champions for the fifth time and cup winners for the fourth time. This is the second time they have made the double since 1971.

At the beginning of the season Rosenborg was already slightly ahead, but Lillestrøm SK came on at the end of the first half of the season and took the lead for four match days. But then Rosenborg passed them again and had seven wins and two draws in the last ten games. As a result, the lead grew to ten points. After the 20th matchday, Rosenborg was finally certain as champions.

Two of the three newcomers ( Strømmen IF and Djerv 1919 ) had to relegate again.
