Jan Åge Fjørtoft (born January 10, 1967 in Ålesund , Norway ) is a former Norwegian football player .

Career

Club career

Beginnings in Norway, Austria and England

Fjørtoft started his career with his hometown club Gursken AK as a child. He played for Norwegian clubs until 1989 before moving to Rapid Vienna in 1989 , where he stayed until 1993. In 1989 he was player of the year in Austria and was only the second non-Austrian (after Jørn Bjerregaard ) to win this title. The Norwegian then played for various clubs in England for five years.

Eintracht Frankfurt

Between 1998 and 2001 Fjørtoft played a total of 52 games (14 goals) for Eintracht Frankfurt . There he became a crowd favorite, mainly because of his personable manner and his quick-witted comments.

According to his own statement, the striker scored the most important goal of his career on May 29, 1999 when he scored the goal - he loaded the opposing goalkeeper with a stepover right in front of the shot - to Eintracht's 5-1 victory against 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the last minute of the game secured the relegation of Frankfurt. Competitor 1. FC Nürnberg had to relegate because of the fewer goals scored.

Another career highlight was the winning goal in the 2000/01 Bundesliga season at Bayern Munich . At that time he lifted the ball at full speed over Oliver Kahn into the goal.

Return to Norway and end of career

In 2001 he returned to Stabæk Fotball in Norway and ended his career with Lillestrøm SK in 2002 .

In total, Fjørtoft has scored 307 goals in 620 competitive games in four different countries.

National team career

Fjørtoft made 71 appearances for Norway and scored 20 goals. Among other things, he took part in the 1994 World Cup in the USA . His last international match was against Georgia in 1997 . He was captain for Norway in 15 games.

Further career

Until the end of 2008 Fjørtoft held the managerial position at Lillestrøm SK, the club where he had ended his career as an active footballer. He directs the sports programs at Viasat, Norway with games in the Champions League, European League, Norwegian internationals and FA Cup England. Fjörtoft is also chairman of the "MTG United for Peace" foundation , which operates in 33 countries and has partnerships with the Nobel Peace Center and the Red Cross. Fjörtoft also runs its own company that deals with communication strategies. Since 2011 he has been part of the football team at the pay TV broadcaster Sky.

Since March 2014 he has been the team manager of the Norwegian national team .

Private

Jan Åge Fjørtoft is married and has three children. He currently lives in Norway. His eldest son Markus (* 1994) played as a professional in Norway for Bærum SK before he went to study at Duke University in August 2014 . There he currently plays for the university soccer team, the Duke Blue Devils .

As a result of an April Fool's joke, a real initiative was founded in Frankfurt am Main in April 2007 to rename Walther-von-Cronberg- Platz to “Jan-Aage-Fjörtoft-Platz” in order to commemorate the player who had long been a legend in Frankfurt preserve.
