Alexander Schlager (born February 1, 1996 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian football goalkeeper .

Career

Career start in Salzburg

Schlager began his career at ASK Salzburg . He then moved to FC Red Bull Salzburg . From April to August 2007 he played in the youth team of ASK Maxglan . In August 2007 he moved to SV Austria Salzburg . In 2009 he returned to the youth team at Red Bull Salzburg, where he would later play in the academy.

In May 2012, he made his debut for the amateurs of Red Bull Salzburg in the Regional , when he on 27 day of the season 2011/12 against the amateurs of SCR Altach was from the beginning used. However, this was his only assignment for the Red Bull Juniors, who were replaced by FC Liefering as the Salzburg farm team after the 2011/12 season . In May 2013 he was against FK Austria Wien for the first time in the professional squad of Salzburg, but was not used.

Loan to Germany and Bundesliga debut

For the 2014/15 season he was sent to Germany to the A-juniors from RB Leipzig awarded. In October 2014 he made his first appearance in the A-Juniors Bundesliga against Dynamo Dresden . In November 2014 he was against the second team of FC Carl Zeiss Jena for the first time in the squad of the fifth-class second team of Leipzig, but was not used. By the end of the season he had played 18 games in the A-Junioren-Bundesliga, which he completed with Leipzig as champions of the North / Northeast relay. After the loan ended, he returned to Austria for the 2015/16 season and was loaned to the Bundesliga club SV Grödig . In July 2015, he made his debut for Grödig in the Bundesliga when he was in the starting line-up against SCR Altach on the first matchday of that season. During his loan, he made ten Bundesliga appearances for SV Grödig, with whom he was relegated from the Bundesliga as the bottom of the table at the end of the season.

Back to the Bundesliga via the second division

For the 2016/17 season Schlager moved to the second division club Floridsdorfer AC . In July 2016 he played his first game in the second division against WSG Wattens . By the end of the season he made 23 appearances for the Viennese, but in the final rounds only Martin Fraisl was in goal.

For the 2017/18 season he switched to Bundesliga club LASK , with whom he received a contract valid until June 2020. In his first season with the Upper Austrians, he couldn't get past Pavao Pervan , so he only played his first game for LASK in the Bundesliga on the last match day against SV Mattersburg . After Pervan's departure, Schlager became the main goalkeeper of LASK in the summer of 2018 and also played his first international match at club level against Lillestrøm SK . In September 2018, his contract was prematurely extended to June 2021.

National team

Schlager played against the Czech Republic for the first time for the Austrian U-17 team in March 2012 . With this he took part in the 2013 European Championship . There he was in goal in all three games of the Austrians, who, however, were eliminated as third in Group A in the preliminary round. In the same year he took part with the U-17 team in the World Cup, in which he was the last in Group E, however, also eliminated in the preliminary round. As at the European Championship, Schlager was used in all three games.

Between March and May 2014, he played three games for the U-18 team . In March 2015 he made his debut against Scotland for the U-19 team , with whom he also took part in the European Championship that year . There he was used in two of three Austrian games, who were eliminated as third in Group A in the preliminary round.

In March 2017 he made his debut against Australia for the U-21 selection , with which he took part in the 2019 European Championship. In August 2019 he was nominated for the senior national team for the first time . He made his debut for this in November 2019 when he was in the starting XI in the European Championship qualification against North Macedonia .
