Krone footballer election

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The "Krone" football election is an election launched and organized by the Austrian daily newspaper Kronen Zeitung , in which the most popular football players in Austria are chosen by the newspaper's readers. In recent years, the trophies have been awarded to the winners in the categories of footballer, footballer and coach of the year at the “Krone” final gala. In contrast to this, the winners of the 2005 election were determined during the international match between Austria and Canada on March 1, 2006. The so far decisive ballot or internet vote only served to qualify the five soccer players with the highest number of votes for the runoff vote by means of televoting . The first footballer of the year to be chosen according to this system was the German Steffen Hofmann , who clearly beat Joey Didulica (Austria), Michael Mörz (Mattersburg) and Mario Bazina (GAK) in the televoting . Marco Salvatore from the amateurs of Vienna Austria surprisingly came in fifth .

Implementing Regulations

The election , which is not carried out by a jury of experts, but by the fans, was first carried out in 1967, and voting is now possible using ballot papers that are printed in the newspaper, the Internet and SMS . Multiple voting is possible, but there must be at least 8 hours between two SMS or Internet votes from the same mobile phone number or IP address. All players (including legionnaires) who have played at least one minute in the Bundesliga or first division in the respective calendar year are eligible . Austrians who are under contract with foreign clubs can also be elected. They must also have played at least one minute of play in the highest or second highest division of the respective country.

The soccer player of the year has also been elected since 1983 . The mode is the same as that of the men. So far, however, there have been restrictions to the effect that women could only vote using the original ballot from the daily newspaper. In 2005, for the first time, votes for the footballer of the year can also be cast via internet voting. The newest category is the Coach of the Year vote, introduced in 1995 . In principle, the same conditions apply as for the footballer election. Only the head coach of the Austrian first and second division clubs (regardless of their nationality) and the coach of the Austrian men's national team as well as Austrian coaches in the two top divisions of another country and an Austrian coach of a foreign national team are eligible. In the election year 2005, the head coach of the ÖFB women's league clubs could also be elected for the first time .

In 38 election years so far, the election trophy has been presented to 22 different football players. The previous record winner of this election is the 55-time Austrian national player Dietmar Kühbauer , Kühbauer was able to win the election six times (1996, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004), as a player from SK Rapid Wien , Real Sociedad and SV Mattersburg .

The second most successful footballer of the year are the star of the 1970s and 1980s and former team boss of the national team Hans Krankl, as well as the still active player of SK Rapid Vienna Steffen Hofmann . In fourth place on the all-time list of the best, Walter Schachner , who was also twice named coach of the year after his career as a player, and David Alaba were able to enter with three wins each .

In 1983, Robert Sara from Austria Wien won the most votes in an election year . With 1,129,965 votes, which at that time could only be given with a newspaper coupon, he and the then rapid player Peter Pacult are one of the two footballers who were able to exceed the limit of 1,000,000 votes. Dietmar Kühbauer only missed this mark by around 13,000 votes in his last triumph in 2004.

Up until now, the Krone footballer election for Player of the Year has mostly been the domain of SK Rapid Wien fans. Overall, the Austrian record champions can point to 22 selected footballers of the year so far, with multiple wins by Hans Krankl, Didi Kühbauer, Michael Konsel, Steffen Hofmann and others. The eternal competitor FK Austria Wien achieved seven wins, with the last win by Zlatko Junuzović from 2010. The fans of SV Austria Salzburg also successfully collected for Hans Krankl and Otto Konrad in the 1990s and thus entered their club three times on the list of winners. The supporters of SV Mattersburg were also very active and thus helped their star Dietmar Kühbauer to receive his last three honors. SK Sturm Graz players have won three times : Ivica Vastić in 1999, Markus Schopp in 2000 and Sebastian Prödl in 2007. The then second division Donawitzer SV Alpine Leoben was able to enter twice in the list of winners with the victories of Peter Pumm in 1971 and Walter Schachner in 1976. Traditionally, Austrian legionaries abroad have a hard time getting votes from their fans. With Andreas Herzog ( Werder Bremen ), Didi Kühbauer during his time at Real Sociedad and David Alaba ( FC Bayern Munich ) only three legionnaires have been able to win this coveted title. Conversely, three players with non-Austrian citizenship, the Dane Johnny Bjerregaard (twice), the Norwegian Jan Åge Fjørtof and the German Steffen Hofmann (four times), have won the election.
