The Mattersburg Sports Association , or SV Mattersburg for short , was a football club from the Burgenland city of Mattersburg . The club, founded in 1922, played from 2003 to 2020 - with a two-year break from 2013 to 2015 - in the highest league in Austria. The home games of the "SVM" have been played in the Pappelstadion since 1952 , the club colors were green and white. The club was also one of four shareholders in the Burgenland Football Academy . The soccer department was in the SVM Profisport GmbHoutsourced, whose sole shareholder was the association. Game operations were discontinued in August 2020.

history

Early years and promotion to the B-League

Football came to Mattersburg for the first time in 1912 through students who played games here in their free time. The decisive starting point for founding their own association was provided by the Sieber family, who moved from Vienna to Mattersburg in 1919. Their sons already played football in clubs in Vienna, especially Matthias Sieber, who played as a defender for SpC Rudolfshügel in the Austrian league . The Mattersburg sports association was founded on June 10, 1922, and the club's colors were set as green and white. The club started in the Burgenland state championship together with ASV Neufeld and SC Sauerbrunn in autumn . The club didn't have a chance for the title back then, but soon rose to become one of the strongest clubs in Burgenland. Against ASV Neufeld, however, they were always left behind, also because for various reasons the Burgenland football association, which was dominated by Neufeld, repeatedly ordered point deductions. On March 15, 1929, he left the Burgenland Association and subsequently joined the Lower Austrian Association on July 31, 1929.

In Lower Austria the SV Mattersburg had a much stronger competition, so that the club, apart from two one-year guest appearances in the regional league , played in the 2nd class. During the Second World War, the game had to be stopped from 1941 to 1945, after which the club was reactivated in the new Burgenland association. In 1949 SV Mattersburg came to the new national league, from which the team was able to emerge victoriously as national champions for the first time in 1953. The reward for this was the promotion to the second-rate B-League , in which the game association 1953/54 could not assert itself. So the green-whites play again in the national league, which was won again in 1956. In the following new relegation to the B-League, the Burgenlanders had no chance against Upper Austria's SV nitrogen Linz (0: 5, 4: 3). In 1957 they won after winning the regional league again in the relegation against ATSV Ranshofen with 3: 1 and 4: 3, in the B-League 1957/58 , however, the relegation was again missed.

Missed jump into prime, crash and return

SV Mattersburg stayed in the national league for a few years before the fourth national title to date in 1963 brought the ticket to the new, second-class Regionalliga Ost . For the first time in the club's history, relegation succeeded in the second stage. Thanks to clever reinforcements, the “football miracle Mattersburg” was soon on everyone's lips, because the club led the table until the penultimate matchday in 1964/65 , so that it had a great chance of becoming the first Burgenland club to be promoted to the top national league. A home win against ASV Siegendorf on the last day of the match seemed likely, especially after SV Mattersburg took a 1-0 lead and was awarded a penalty. Lebersorger, who piquantly played at 1. Simmeringer SC the following season , missed and Siegendorf was able to equalize. As a result, Simmering was able to enjoy the ascent at the last second, and in Mattersburg there was resignation. After the club was even in a relegation battle in 1965/66 , a good result was achieved again in 1966/67 with fourth place. Since SC Eisenstadt made it to the national league in the same year , there were plans to unite the two leading clubs in the country, which were not far from each other, to form “FC Burgenland”, but this did not work out.

Due to the ups and downs of recent years, SV Mattersburg gnawed at serious financial problems, which in 1967/68 led to voluntary relegation from the regional league to the regional league and were now partially offset by the sale of numerous players. In the state league, a strong rivalry with the neighboring SV Rohrbach developed these days , for example Rohrbach fanatics set fire to the benches in the Mattersburg poplar stadium in 1968. At least since the relegation in 1987 to the Burgenland 2nd division middle, the once leading club in the country was threatened with falling into insignificance. After chairman Martin Pucher took office , there was a new upswing and youth work was also intensified. In 1990, SV Mattersburg returned to the national league, where they soon established themselves in the top half of the table. With the former Hungarian World Cup participant Péter Hannich , he was promoted to the Regionalliga Ost in 1994. It was also the Hungarian who scored the decisive 1-0 win against arch rivals Rohrbach in front of 6,500 spectators for SV Mattersburg.

In the Regionalliga Ost, which is now the third level in Austria, the Burgenlanders played right from the start. After a second place in 1994/95 , in 1999/2000 with only two defeats, the promotion to the second-class 1st division could be fixed. The last hurdle, relegation, was mastered 1: 1 and 5: 0 against FC Lustenau 07 . After the team was strengthened by the returnees and former Austrian World Cup participant Dietmar Kühbauer , who comes from the Mattersburg youth, the superior win of the second stage succeeded in 2002/03 with 13 points ahead of DSV Leoben and thus the promotion to the Bundesliga . In 2003, the year of promotion, the ÖFB Cup semi-finals were made for the first time . The enormous number of spectators in this and the following seasons was remarkable. In the second division in 2002/03, SV Mattersburg had an average of 9,800 spectators. Even in the Bundesliga, no club had nearly as many viewers. Second place went to SV Austria Salzburg with 6,700 fans. In the first Bundesliga, the average was even increased to 11,100 visitors.

SV Mattersburg was able to stay away from the relegation battle in the first few seasons, but for a long time the club was considered an extremely weak team. An away defeat series with Werner Gregoritsch and Muhsin Ertuğral cost two coaches the employment. Franz Lederer , who was employed as interim trainer in November 2004, secured himself the permanent coaching position with five compulsory victories in a row and the first away win since October 2003, over a year. The 2004/05 season ended in fifth place. For the time being, this represented the best placement that a Burgenland football club has ever achieved in the top division. With a 3-2 victory in the 2006 ÖFB Cup semi-final against ASKÖ Pasching , SV Mattersburg was the first Burgenland team to make it to the ÖFB Cup final . However, the team had little to achieve in the final against the favorites and new Austrian champions FK Austria Wien and lost 3-0. Nevertheless, it was the first time to qualify for the UEFA Cup . The home game did not take place in the local poplar stadium , but in Vienna's Ernst Happel stadium , because only 3,000 fans would have been allowed in the home stadium. The Mattersburger failed at their premiere on the European stage at the Polish runner-up Wisla Krakow (1: 1 and 0: 1).

Establishment and relegation to the second class

The successful run could be continued in 2006/07 , the club provided four national players with Cem Atan , Michael Mörz , Christian Fuchs and Jürgen Patocka and was able to strengthen itself with the former German national player Carsten Jancker . During the season, SV Mattersburg was in second place behind FC Red Bull Salzburg for a long time and ended up in third place in the Bundesliga - the best position ever for a Burgenland soccer team. The cup final in Vienna could also be reached again with a surprising 3-2 away win in Salzburg. As in the previous year, the opponent was Austria Wien, who only finished sixth in the Bundesliga. Thus the Mattersburg were even in favorites, but gave a 1-0 half-time lead and lost 1: 2.

In the 2007/08 season the SV Mattersburg started well again, was briefly even leaders of the Bundesliga and finally finished a good fifth place. In the first round of the UEFA Cup qualification, they met the team of FK Aqtöbe from Kazakhstan, which they defeated 4-2 after a 0-1 defeat in Aqtöbe at home - for the first time in the Pappelstadion. In the second round, however, the Mattersburger clearly failed at FC Basel with an overall result of 2: 6. In the following season 2008/09 the SV had to fight relegation until the last day of the game. However, as ninth in the table, the league was preserved this season. Things went much better in the 2009/10 season , in which Mattersburg was never in danger of relegation and took sixth place in the final table. In the 2010/11 season you had to be content with ninth place in the table. However, the Burgenlanders were not in real danger of relegation, as they were twelve points ahead of the bottom of the table and relegated LASK Linz at the end of the season .

The 2011/12 season did not go much better, but in the end the relegated Kapfenberger SV was clearly kept at a distance with an advantage of 15 points.

In the 2012/13 season, SV fell from seventh to tenth and last place in the table on the last match day after the game against direct relegation competitor FC Admira Wacker Mödling was lost 0-1 and the two clubs FC Wacker Innsbruck and SC Wiener, which were also in danger of relegation Neustadt were able to win their last games. The four teams were only one point apart at the end of the season. Admira, tied on points with SV Mattersburg, was able to secure ninth place thanks to the better goal difference and thus remain in the Bundesliga. Tenth place meant relegation to the first division after ten years in the Bundesliga. After the team there, although hardly changed in terms of personnel, was only in a midfield position, the new coach Alfred Tatar was on leave on October 7, 2013 . Franz Lederer, who was promoted to sports director, took over the training on an interim basis until winter. On December 20, 2013, Ivica Vastić, the new trainer, was presented.

Resurgence in 2014/15

In the 2014 season, the promotion could already be fixed in lap 32. Since the only competitor for the championship title, FC Liefering, has renounced a possible promotion, the previous 62 points were enough for a fixed promotion.

The last matchday of the First League took place on May 29, 2015, whereby the SVM had to prove themselves away at FC Liefering and prevailed with a 4-0 victory over the Salzburg team, who were not eligible for promotion. The season ended with 71 points from 36 games in first place, so nothing stood in the way of promotion to the Bundesliga.

New first class from 2015/16

The budget for the 2015/16 season was 6.5 million euros, in the final table the club was ninth with 39 points, after the team was seventh in the autumn round. This setback in spring was also due to the worst home record of all ten teams, which culminated in a 9-0 home debacle against Austria Wien . It was also no longer possible to build on the high audience figures of earlier years.

After a disastrous first half of 2016/17 , after which the team was tenth and last place in the table with 11 points, coach Ivica Vastić was dismissed. Gerald Baumgartner was presented as his successor on January 3, 2017. With Baumgartner, there was a clear upward trend, so they finished second in the second half of the table behind champions Red Bull Salzburg and seventh in the final table.

In the 2017/18 season , the Burgenlanders showed ambitions for the European Cup, but in the end the team finished sixth five points behind the Europa League qualifier FC Admira Wacker Mödling .

In the season 2018/19 Mattersburg started with a 3: 2 win against SCR Altach . However, this was followed by defeats against champions Red Bull Salzburg and promoted TSV Hartberg as well as a 6-0 home defeat against Wolfsberger AC , which meant that the team was only 11th in the table after the 4th round. As a consequence, trainer Gerald Baumgartner was dismissed on August 21, 2018, Markus Schmidt was appointed interim trainer and the previous goalkeeper trainer Robert Almer was appointed as the successor to Franz Lederer as sporting director.

For the 2019/20 season , Franz Ponweiser became the new trainer for Burgenland. In the basic round, SV Mattersburg came eleventh. In the qualifying round, the SVM was able to secure relegation, but missed the re-qualification for the Europa League playoffs.

Bankruptcy and cessation of gaming operations in 2020

The future of the association was in jeopardy since the main sponsor, Commerzialbank Mattersburg im Burgenland , was banned from business operations by the financial market supervisory authority with immediate effect on July 15, 2020 . Bank director Pucher had built up the association for around 30 years and was also its chairman. Around 4.9 million euros of the 11 million euros annual budget of the football club was due to sponsorship by the Commerzialbank; a large part of the amount is likely to have been "invented" by means of fictitious accounts and by manipulating real contracts in the bank. As a result of the scandal, the club was left without a chairman, coach, sports director and main sponsor. In the event of bankruptcy, there was a risk of forced relegation from the Bundesliga. The SV Mattersburg football academy, in which the state of Burgenland holds a 40% share, is to be continued as a state sports center for popular sports. On August 5, 2020, it was announced that gaming operations will be discontinued with immediate effect. The board of directors announced that it would file for bankruptcy and give up the right to play in the Bundesliga. In the following week the Mattersburger Sportverein (MSV 2020) was founded, which is to continue the youth work of SV Mattersburg and to form a combat team for the Burgenland regional league from the existing U16.
