Robert Almer (born March 20, 1984 in Bruck an der Mur ) is a former Austrian soccer goalkeeper who was most recently under contract with FK Austria Wien .
Player career
society
Almer grew up in Birkfeld in Styria, where he first played as a striker for the local club SV Birkfeld. Almer switched to goal at the age of 13 and was appointed to an Austrian youth team for the first time at the age of 15.
Almer's first professional station was SK Sturm Graz . After successful appearances in the club's amateur and youth team, he finally moved to Austria Vienna . After a year it was awarded to the SCR Altach , which is in cooperation with Austria , in order to collect match practice; previously he had been under contract with SC Untersiebenbrunn at short notice . After the guest appearance in Altach, Almer switched to DSV Leoben , also a cooperation club of Austria.
After half a year in Leoben , Almer returned to Austria and was one of the goalkeepers for the amateurs in the second-class first division and a substitute goalie for the professional team. For the 2006/07 season he moved to the Austrian Bundesliga club and UEFA Cup starter SV Mattersburg , where he also had his first appearance in the top Austrian division. For the 2008/09 season he returned to Austria in an exchange deal against Thomas Salamon . He was in the squad of the team that won the ÖFB Cup . Since that season he has repeatedly come to appearances as a substitute goalkeeper for Szabolcs Sáfár and Heinz Lindner .
With the beginning of the 2011/12 season, Almer moved to the German second division Fortuna Düsseldorf (12 missions). With Fortuna he rose to the Bundesliga . Behind Fabian Giefer , he was only second goalkeeper and only played one role. After relegation to the second division in May 2013, he left the club. For the 2013/14 season he signed a contract with FC Energie Cottbus .
In the following year, the Bundesliga club Hannover 96 signed the Austrian as the second goalkeeper and provided him with a contract until the end of the 2014/15 season .
For the season 2015/16 Almer returns to FK Austria Wien back and is set there as goalkeeper and captain.
On October 20, 2016, he was seriously injured during the Europa League game against AS Roma (tear of the cruciate ligament, outer ligament and inner meniscus). After the 2017/18 season, his departure from Austria was planned. On June 4, 2018, Almer announced his retirement due to a knee injury.
National team
Almer was the goalkeeper of Austria's U-19 national team, which won the bronze medal at the 2003 U-19 European Championship in Liechtenstein . He played 30 international youth matches in various youth teams in Austria.
In November 2009 he was called up for the first time in the senior national team for the ÖFB international match against Spain . On November 15, 2011, he made his debut for the senior national team in the friendly against Ukraine , in which he was used over the full game distance. In the subsequent 3-1 international win against Finland , Almer was again called up for the entire season.
On September 5, 2015, Almer beat the ÖFB record of 458 minutes without conceding a goal, which Friedl Koncilia had set between 1982 and 1983, in the European Championship qualifier against Moldova . In the following game against Sweden he increased the record to Zlatan Ibrahimović's goal to 603 minutes.
On May 12, 2016, Austria's national coach Marcel Koller appointed Robert Almer to be number 1 in the goal for the 2016 European Championship . He was in goal in all three games until the team was eliminated after the group stage.
Career as a trainer and functionary
After retiring from his career, he announced in June that he would work as a goalkeeper coach for SV Mattersburg . After two months as the club's goalkeeper coach, he also became the sporting director of Mattersburg in August 2018. In October 2018, Almer announced that executing both positions would not be compatible in the long term and that another solution would soon be found within the association.
For private reasons he will leave SV Mattersburg after the end of the 2018/19 season and take up a job as a goalkeeper coach at the ÖFB .
