The Austrian men's soccer championship 2008/09 consisted of the 97th edition of the highest Austrian professional championship (Bundesliga) and a 34th edition of a second highest division (first league) . The Bundesliga began on July 8, 2008 and ended on May 31, 2009 with the 36th Bundesliga round. The opening game was the match between SK Sturm Graz and the champions of the 2007/08 season SK Rapid Wien in the Graz UPC Arena . Last year's runner-up, FC Red Bull Salzburg , won the Austrian championship as the new title holder two rounds before the end of the season. It was the fifth title for Salzburg and the second since Red Bull took over the club . This season, a new season goal record of the top division and a new joint audience record of the highest and second highest level were achieved. The champions of the second highest division, which began on July 11, 2008 with all five games and ended on May 29, 2009, were the 2008 newly formed SC Magna Wiener Neustadt . Master of the ÖFB women's league was 2008/09 of SV Neulengbach .

Season course

In the top division, the tipp3 Bundesliga , ten teams played for three international starting places, one Champions League place (second qualifying round) and two Europa League places (second qualifying round). In addition, the last placed had to relegate to the second highest league, the ADEG Erste Liga . While Red Bull Salzburg secured the Champions League place with the championship title, runners-up Rapid Wien and fourth-placed Sturm Graz got a place in the newly designed Europa League qualification. The Grazers only got an international starting place because the championship third Austria Wien is automatically eligible to start in the Europa League qualification (third qualifying round) as the winner in the ÖFB Cup . In the fight against relegation there was a duel in the last quarter in which SV Mattersburg just got the upper hand over SCR Altach and thus remained in the top division. The top scorer was Marc Janko (Red Bull Salzburg), who narrowly missed Hans Krankl's previous Bundesliga record (41 goals) with 39 goals . Janko had scored the most goals in the UEFA division , but ended up “only” in third place in the European championship for the Golden Boot due to the point rule.

In the ADEG First League , twelve teams played for promotion to the Bundesliga. Furthermore, the last three clubs had to be relegated to the regional leagues East, Middle or West, depending on their affiliation. The SC Magna Wiener Neustadt , sponsored by the industrialist Frank Stronach , who took over the license from SC Schwanenstadt in the summer of 2008 , secured the championship title in the First League with one round before the end before FC Wacker Innsbruck , which was associated with promotion to the Bundesliga . Of the newcomers, only SKN St. Pölten held their own with a fifth place in the first division, while the other two climbers, SV Grödig and 1. FC Vöcklabruck , together with the traditional club DSV Leoben, which slipped into bankruptcy in February, paved the way had to go back to the respective regional leagues. The top scorer was the Brazilian Diego Viana from SV Grödig with 20 goals.

In the three regional leagues, 16 clubs each played for one promotion place to the first division. In addition, the three last-placed teams had to relegate to one of the nine national leagues after assignment. Since from the first division no club relegated to the Regionalliga Ost, but two relegated to the Regionalliga Mitte, there were only two relegation places in the Regionalliga Ost, while there were four in the Regionalliga Mitte. In the Regionalliga Ost, the traditional club First Vienna FC secured the championship title in 1894 and thus returns to the second highest division after eight years. In the Regionalliga Mitte there was a championship decision on the last match day in a long distance duel, which TSV Hartberg won against the Grazer AK thanks to the goal difference that was two better goals in the end. The Hartberger return there two years after their relegation from the first division. In the Regionalliga West, the championship title went to FC Dornbirn in 1913 , which again belongs to the second highest league after being relegated to lower regions in 1989. The top scorer of the Regionalliga Ost was Osman Bozkurt (First Vienna FC 1894) with 26 goals, the Regionalliga Mitte Robert Lenz ( FC Wels ) with 20 goals and the Regionalliga West Armin Hobel ( WSG Wattens ) with 35 goals.

The Bundesliga , the top division in Austrian football, was played for the 89th time in the 2008/09 season. As of this season, the sponsor name of the Bundesliga changed from T-Mobile Bundesliga to tipp3 -Bundesliga powered by T-Mobile , as the Austrian sports betting provider tipp3 replaced T-Mobile as the new main sponsor . The mobile communications company remained a sub-sponsor of the Bundesliga.

For the first time in 41 years , Kapfenberger SV was again represented in Austria's top division. The Obersteirer replaced FC Wacker Innsbruck , which was relegated from the Bundesliga in 2007/08 .

The pay-TV broadcaster Premiere had the rights to show all games in full length. While on Fridays and Sundays a single game was shown live over the full length of the game, Premiere showed the remaining three Saturday games in a conference call. In addition, the public broadcaster ORF had the rights to broadcast the "top game of the round" as a single game on Sundays (for games during the week, this was the Tuesday game). Furthermore, the ORF was allowed to show a 45-minute summary of the remaining four games per round, which was mostly done in the context of the program Sport am Sonntag together with an ORF football expert.

In the “top game of the round”, Red Bull Salzburg was seen most often (18 times), while SV Mattersburg only appeared once, as little as any other team.

mode

In the 2008/09 season, as in previous years, ten clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 rounds. Each team played twice at home and twice away against each of the nine other teams. In the tipp3 Bundesliga, the ten teams played for three international starting places, one Champions League place and two Europa League places . In addition, the last placed had to relegate to the second highest league, the ADEG Erste Liga . The champions FC Red Bull Salzburg are eligible to qualify for the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League season (second qualifying round). Second placed SK Rapid Wien , fourth placed SK Sturm Graz (both in the second qualifying round) and the ÖFB Cup winner FK Austria Wien (third qualifying round) are allowed to qualify for the UEFA Europa League in the same season . Due to the cup victory of third-placed Austria Wien, the qualification place for the Europa League was passed on to fourth-placed Sturm Graz. The last placed SCR Altach rose to the second highest division, the first division .

Season course

The 2008/09 Bundesliga season was dominated by Red Bull Salzburg. If the club still had difficulties starting in the first quarter, the team settled in first place from the 14th round until the end of the season, whereby the club positioned itself a total of 25 times. Red Bull Salzburg's direct opponents in the championship match were the two Viennese clubs Rapid and Austria and Sturm Graz. However, in the 28th round, Red Bull Salzburg and Rapid Vienna were finally able to break away for the rest of the games. The Viennese did not make up for the small deficit in points and were therefore unable to successfully defend the title from the 2007/08 season .

The relegation battle was initially the SV Mattersburg, the Kapfenberger SV, Austria Carinthia and the SCR Altach. The Carinthians were able to break away after just a few laps and positioned themselves in the midfield for the rest of the season, so that the Carinthians ended up in sixth place at the end of the season despite a weak last quarter. The Kapfenberger SV team achieved significantly better results from the 19th round and the team was therefore increasingly able to set itself apart from the other two clubs. For the remainder of the season, the club dueled with LASK Linz for seventh place in the table, but in the end the Linzers placed ahead of Kapfenberger SV. SV Mattersburg and SCR Altach were able to improve significantly in the last quarter, but the Altachers, who wore the “red lantern” 26 times, had to relegate to the second highest division at the end of the season.

Over the course of the season, SV Ried mainly positioned itself in the midfield and almost qualified for an international starting position thanks to a very strong spring performance. The team remained unbeaten as the only one in their own stadium and was also the team with the fewest goals.

Transfers

Kapfenberger SV and Austria Kärnten recorded the most additions with 17 players each. 19 players left Kärntner Austria throughout the season, more than any other team. Austria Wien, Sturm Graz and Austria Kärnten presented a strongly changed team. It was the first time that a Chinese player, Sun Xiang, appeared in the Bundesliga.

Among the newcomers were players like Georg Koch (to Rapid Vienna), Kevin Bobson , Barry Opdam , Robin Nelisse , Anis Boussaïdi , Somen Tchoyi , Mejdi Traoui (all to Red Bull Salzburg), Mamadou Diabang , Sun Xiang (both to Austria Vienna ), Markus Weissenberger , Thomas Prager (both to LASK Linz), Stefan Lexa (to SV Ried), Aílton and Zé Elias (both to SCR Altach).

The departures included Jürgen Säumel (to FC Turin ), Christian Fuchs (to VfL Bochum ), Hans-Peter Berger (to Leixões SC ) and Roland Kirchler (to WSG Swarovski Wattens ). Dietmar Kühbauer (SV Mattersburg) ended his career before the start of the season. After the 35th round, Ivica Vastić and Michael Baur also ended their careers (both LASK Linz).

With Co Adriaanse (Red Bull Salzburg), Karl Daxbacher (Austria Wien) and Andrej Panadić (LASK Linz) three new coaches were represented at the beginning of the season. SV Ried parted ways with the designated new coach Georg Zellhofer before the first round, later assistant coach Gerhard Schweitzer took over for one game , and Paul Gludovatz signed on from round two . On September 4th, Urs Schönenberger took over the coaching position from Heinz Fuchsbichler at SCR Altach. This was replaced by Georg Zellhofer during the winter break on January 12, 2009. On October 27th, Panadić was dismissed as a trainer at LASK Linz and Klaus Lindenberger was hired in his place . The club removed him after a long series of negatives and replaced him with Hans Krankl towards the end of March .

Andreas Ulmer , who played 37 games during the entire season , achieved something extraordinary , although usually only 36 games are possible. The reason for this is his move from SV Ried to Red Bull Salzburg. Since he played through all 22 games for SV Ried during the autumn season and Red Bull Salzburg had to play one supplementary game in the spring season, Ulmer played in this supplementary game of the 22nd round of Salzburg at two different clubs.

    Goal statistics

Austria's most successful goalscorer Marc Janko (FC Red Bull Salzburg)

In the 2008/09 season, the season record of 1980/81 (509 goals) with 588 goals was exceeded by 79 goals. This resulted in an average of 3.27 goals per game. Rapid Wien scored the most goals with 89 goals and Mattersburg the fewest goals with 42. The fewest goals were scored by SV Ried (38), while SCR Altach scored the most goals with 90 goals. The game with the most goals was SV Mattersburg against Sturm Graz in the 13th round, which the Graz team won 6-5. Rapid Wien celebrated their biggest win in the 20th round against SCR Altach (8: 1). The biggest draw was 3: 3 and was reached in the 13th round in the game Austria Kärnten against Rapid Vienna and in the 34th round in the game Kapfenberger SV egegn Sturm Graz . The round with the highest number of goals was the 13th, in which a total of 31 goals (average = 6.2) were scored. The fewest goals were scored one round before, in the 12th round, with eight goals (average = 1.6).

Mario Sonnleitner (Sturm Graz) scored the first goal of the season in the 33rd minute in the game Sturm Graz against Rapid Wien , the last goal was scored by Herwig Drechsel (SV Ried) in the 94th minute with a penalty in the game SV Ried against Sturm Graz .

LASK Linz suffered the longest series without a goal with eight consecutive games between the 13th and 20th round. On the other hand, SCR Altach scored 18 times in a row between the 15th and 32nd rounds, something that no other club could do. Kapfenberger SV had the longest series of conceding a goal with a total of 19 times in a row between the 14th and 32nd round. On the other hand, Austria Kärnten was able to score six times in a row between the 5th and 10th round.

    Goalscorer table

The top scorer in the top division was Marc Janko (FC Red Bull Salzburg), who with his 39 goals narrowly missed Hans Krankl's record from the 1977/87 season (41 goals from the 1977/78 season ). Janko had scored the most goals in the UEFA division , but ended up “only” in third place in the European championship for the Golden Boot due to the point rule. The UEFA point rule is a coefficient by which each goal scorer in a league is multiplied (e.g. Austria 1.5 or Spain 2.0). The coefficient is based on the strength of the league (the strongest leagues with a 2.0 rate include those from Spain, Italy, England, Germany and France). The winner of the Golden Boot was Diego Forlán ( Atlético Madrid ), second was Samuel Eto'o ( FC Barcelona )

Second place in the goalscorer table was Erwin Hoffer with 27 goals and third was Stefan Maierhofer with 23 goals (both Rapid Vienna).

    Stadiums and spectators

This year's season achieved the highest average attendance after the 2007/2008 season . A total of 1,624,905 million people attended the 180 Bundesliga games, which was 2.8 percent less than the previous season. The average was 9,027 viewers per game. Rapid Vienna had the best average with 15,777 spectators, which meant that almost every game was sold out. In contrast, the Kapfenberger SV recorded an average of only 3,658 spectators, which is relatively little for the highest level in football. The goal of the Bundesliga is, according to Bundesliga chairman Georg Pangl , to increase spectator interest to more than two million stadium visitors in the future: “Another goal is to further improve and improve the quality in the stadiums - as has already happened this season to offer the viewers even more service and comfort and thereby break the two million mark. With one round before the end, SC Magna secured the much-acclaimed championship title in the first division
Champion plate of the Austrian First League

The first league , which was held for the 34th time in the 2008/09 season and represents the second highest level in Austrian football, began on July 11, 2008 with five games and ended on May 29, 2009. The sponsor name of the first division This season changed from Red Zac -Erste Liga to ADEG Erste Liga , as ADEG was hired as the new main sponsor in spring 2008. In addition to Bundesliga relegated Wacker Innsbruck , the three regional league promoters completed the twelve teams in the first division . These are from the Regionalliga West of SV Grödig from Salzburg , from the Regionalliga Mitte the 1. FC Vöcklabruck from Upper Austria and from the Regionalliga Ost the SKN St. Pölten from Lower Austria . In addition to these four newcomers, SC Schwanenstadt was renamed FC Magna Wiener Neustadt and ASK Schwadorf was renamed FC Admira Wacker Mödling after the 2007/08 season .

As in the Bundesliga, the TV rights belonged to Premiere. In addition to the Friday games conference, the pay TV broadcaster was also able to choose a game that was shown as the “top game of the round” as a single game, mostly on Saturdays. The ORF had the right to show a summary of all six games per round.

    mode

In the 2008/09 season, as in previous years, twelve clubs competed against each other in a total of 33 rounds. Since 33 is an odd number, the second to sixth-placed clubs from the previous season and the relegated Bundesliga (FC Wacker Innsbruck, FC Gratkorn , SC Austria Lustenau , FC Lustenau , Austria Wien Amateurs and Red Bull Juniors ) had one home game more than the other six clubs (Magna Wiener Neustadt, DSV Leoben, Trenkwalder Admira, SV Grödig, 1. FC Vöcklabruck and SKN St. Pölten). Each team played against each other three times.

The champions of the season, SC Magna Wiener Neustadt , were promoted to the tipp3-Bundesliga. However, if one of the two amateur clubs had been in first place at the end of the season, the second-placed club would have been promoted to the top division, unless it had been an amateur club, so that the third-placed club would have been eligible for promotion. However, if the professional team of the respective amateur team had been in last place in the Bundesliga at the same time, this club would have been allowed to stay in the top division and thus there would have been no relegated or promoted team. The three last-placed teams, in this case SV Grödig (West), 1. FC Vöcklabruck and DSV Leoben (both in the middle), had to be relegated to the respective regional league. However, due to the lack of a license application for the next season, the DSV Leoben would have had to go to the Middle Regional League instead of the club in the relegation ranks, even if they had not occupied a relegation place.

The clubs could only qualify for the UEFA Europa League by winning the ÖFB Cup (third qualifying round). The Admira managed to reach the final, but failed there because of Vienna Austria from the Bundesliga.

    Season course

The heavily sponsored clubs SC Wiener Neustadt (from Magna) and FC Admira Wacker Mödling (from Trenkwalder) started as title favorites, although both, and especially Admira, had difficulties at the beginning. The clubs Wacker Innsbruck and SKN St. Pölten take advantage of these problems, both of which settled at the top of the table until the beginning of the second third. As both clubs subsequently did not achieve such good results, Wiener Neustadt took over the championship lead until the end of the season, constantly followed by Admira. Wacker Innsbruck was able to overtake Admira, who was weak at the end of the season. The SKN St. Pölten placed in the front midfield.

In the relegation battle, both clubs from Lustenau and Admira, SV Grödig, DSV Leoben and 1. FC Vöcklabruck were initially represented, but Admira was able to break away towards the end of the first period and turn to the fight for the title. The two clubs from Lustenau became significantly stronger from the second third and thus saved themselves from relegation. The three other clubs, on the other hand, gained fewer and fewer points and had to relegate to the respective regional leagues. The forced relegation of DSV Leoben was also fixed in advance due to the bankruptcy filed in February 2009.

The two amateur teams from Red Bull Salzburg and Austria Wien as well as FC Gratkorn placed themselves in the midfield between fifth and eighth place throughout the season.

    Third level - regional leagues

    mode

The regional leagues, which represent the third highest division, are divided into East, West and Middle, depending on the federal states. The regional league east includes the federal states of Burgenland , Lower Austria and Vienna , the regional league middle the regional associations Upper Austria , Carinthia and Styria , and the regional league west the federal states Tyrol , Salzburg and Vorarlberg . In each of these three leagues, a direct promotion place to the first division was played, provided that a license was granted by Senate 5 of the Bundesliga. If a club had been refused a license for economic reasons, the top ranked among the alleged relegated members would have remained in the higher-ranking league, since the runner-up in a regional league has no right of promotion. In the Regionalliga Ost, the traditional club First Vienna FC secured the championship title in 1894 and thus returns to the second highest division after eight years. In the Regionalliga Mitte there was a championship decision in the very last game in a long-distance duel, which TSV Hartberg ultimately won against the Grazer AK thanks to the goal difference that was ultimately two hits better. The Hartberger return there two years after their relegation from the first division. In the Regionalliga West, the championship title went to FC Dornbirn in 1913 , which again belongs to the second highest league after being relegated to lower regions in 1989.

The number of relegated teams is basically three per regional league. However, this can change if, on the one hand, the master does not advance to the first division or if the relegation ranks are influenced by the classification of the relegated teams. In any case, the last placed must always leave the league. This was true in the Regionalliga Ost and Mitte, as two clubs from the First League had to relegate to the Regionalliga Mitte and none to the Regionalliga Ost. Thus there were only two relegation places in the Regionalliga Ost and four in the Regionalliga Mitte.

Since two clubs were relegated from the First League to the Middle Regional League this season, a fourth club had to relegate to one of the respective national leagues. At first this was SV Bad Aussee, which occupied a relegation place. But after the first league relegated 1. FC Vöcklabruck announced that they would start again in the 2nd class , the Bad Ausseers replaced the Upper Austrians.

After FC Kärnten had to file for bankruptcy in December 2008 due to over-indebtedness amounting to 5.8 million euros , games had to be stopped in February 2009. For this reason, all games not yet played by FC Kärnten were rated 3-0 for the respective opponent.
