Urs "Longo" Schönenberger (born February 21, 1959 ) is a former Swiss football player (position: defense) and current coach . The nickname "Longo" comes from his height (1.93 m).

Short biography

Urs Schönenberger grew up in Zurich-Wiedikon. He is married, has two children and lives in Arni (Canton Aargau). He completed an apprenticeship as a structural draftsman and, at the age of 20, received his first professional contract with FC Zurich . Among other things, he was also under contract with AC Bellinzona and FC Luzern before ending his playing career with SC Kriens .

After several positions as a coach, he reached the group stage of the Champions League with FC Thun in 2005 and was head coach of the Super League club FC Aarau until October 30, 2006 .

Athletic career

His greatest successes

As a player at FC Zurich, he won the Swiss championship in 1981 when he was just 22 years old, and was able to repeat this success in 1989 as a player at FC Luzern. As a coach with FC Thun, which he took over from Hanspeter Latour , he achieved the runner-up title in 2004/05. In the subsequent qualification for the Champions League, FC Thun reached the group game phase after 3 rounds and wins against Dynamo Kiev (Ukraine) and Malmö FF (Sweden).

Controversial figure at FC Thun

Despite the sporting successes with FC Thun, Urs Schönenberger was released for the 2005/06 season very surprisingly for outsiders - especially his critical questions to the club's board and his personal decisions (he was also called "the never-compromising one") made him one of them controversial figure.

Activities as a trainer for FC Thun

At FC Aarau

Since May 1, 2006 he has coached FC Aarau in the Super League and can be celebrated as the club's “savior” for the 2005/06 season, because thanks to his interventions, relegation to the Challenge League was prevented at the last minute. He had signed a contract there until the end of the 2007/08 season, mainly because the stadium of FC Aarau ( Brügglifeld ) will no longer be accepted as suitable for the Super League by the Swiss Football Association SFV from 2008 . Nonetheless, Urs Schönenberger stated that the declared goal in the 2006/2007 season was to keep FC Aarau, which has been playing in the top division of Switzerland since 1981, “insurmountable”, at least from a sporting point of view. The pressure on Schönenberger had increased steadily, the further the season progressed and the more the defeats increased. The president of FC Aarau, Christian Stebler, demanded at least 3 points from two games (“2 points are not enough”). Since FC Aarau had lost 11 of their current 13 games, the home game against FC Schaffhausen on November 4, 2006 would have been a fateful encounter for Urs Schönenberger. Schönenberger got ahead of this and resigned from his position as head coach on the evening of October 30, 2006. His successor was Ruedi Zahner , who had previously been the head of sports .

At YF Juventus Zurich

From mid-March 2007, Urs Schönenberger was the coach of YF Juventus Zurich , where he replaced the released Raimondo Ponte . Despite all efforts, YF Juventus Zurich was relegated to the first division at the end of the 2006/07 season .

SCR Altach

On September 4, 2008 he took over the coaching position of the Austrian Bundesliga club SCR Altach . On January 12, 2009, Schönenberger was given a leave of absence with immediate effect.

SC Kriens

In February 2012 he was signed by the relegation-threatened Swiss second division club SC Kriens . On March 30th, after only one month, the Kriens Schönenberger resigned from his duties due to unsuccessfulness. The club was relegated from the Challenge League at the end of the season .

On TV

Between April and May 2006 Urs Schönenberger was also active for Swiss television . He took on the role of assistant coach for the docu-soapDer Match ”, which was carried out as part of a training camp followed by a live game . Gilbert Gress was the trainer .

On the occasion of the 2006 World Cup , Swiss television invited Urs Schönenberger as a studio guest to judge individual World Cup games from the coach's point of view.
