history

From the foundation to the centenary

FC Luzern was first mentioned on May 6, 1897 in an advertisement in the Luzerner Tagblatt , which called for a meeting in the Café Alpenclub. However, more than four years passed before it was officially founded on August 12, 1901 in the Seidenhof restaurant. The Swiss Football Association was joined two years later and played the first championship season in the third highest division, the then Serie C. In 1936 , the first promotion to the national league as the highest division succeeded. In 1960 , the team won their first major title with the Cup . In 1989 the championship title was celebrated for the first and so far only time . In 1992 the club became a cup winner for the second time. The club's centenary was celebrated in 2001 with a friendly against FC Barcelona . However, FC Luzern AG went bankrupt in the same year and two years later, relegation to the newly created Challenge League could no longer be prevented.

For the 2006/07 season , FC Luzern rose again and so he played in the Super League for the first time . From then on, Steg Computer GmbH was the new main sponsor . Since no agreement could be reached with promotion coach René van Eck on a contract extension, he was replaced by the newcomer Ciriaco Sforza . In addition to the main goal of maintaining the league, the team reached the Cup final with a 3-2 away win at the then reigning and later champions FC Zurich . She lost it against FC Basel after a controversial penalty in the 93rd minute of the game with 0: 1.

The 2007/08 season ended the club in sixth place.

The team clearly failed to start the 2008/09 season . After twelve laps she was only two points behind at the bottom of the table, whereupon Ciriaco Sforza had to leave. But his successor Roberto Morinini was not very successful with one point from six games. Rolf Fringer became the new coach in November and led the team to the Barrageplatz . After the first leg against FC Lugano had been lost 0-1 away, the last game in the history of the Allmendstadion was won 5-0 on June 13th.

Before the 2009/10 season , the arrival of national player Hakan Yakin was announced. The team achieved fourth place under his direction and thus eligibility for the qualifying round for the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League of the following season.

After a strong preliminary round, the club became winter champions in the 2010/11 season . However, due to a weak sporting spring, they separated from Rolf Fringer. For the rest of the season, U-18 coach Christian Brand took over on an interim basis. The team finished sixth in the end.

For the 2011/12 season , FC Luzern was able to move into the Swissporarena . The first competitive game in the new stadium took place on July 31st against FC Thun and ended goalless. The official opening game against Hamburger SV on September 3rd ended 2-2. The new main sponsor since moving in is Otto's AG , which comes from the region and with whom a two-year contract has been concluded. With the engagement of Murat Yakin , the older brother of Captain Hakan Yakin, as head coach, one hoped for not only a “stadium effect” but also sporting success, which was also initially achieved. The 2011/12 season was the second most successful in the club's history after the championship season 1988/89. The team became runner-up and reached the cup final thanks to a 1-0 away win in the semi-finals against FC Sion . In the final, however, as in the championship, she had to admit defeat to FC Basel . In addition, the FCL players Alain Wiss and Adrian Winter received their first line-up for the Swiss national team . In April 2012, the newly created position of sports director was finally filled with Heinz Herrmann , thus closing the last gap in sports management. With this, President Walter Stierli finally saw his work as done and handed over his office to the Lucerne hotelier Mike Hauser.

After a poor start to 2012/13 , the club parted ways with Murat Yakin after six games with only three points won. His functions took over Ryszard Komornicki , who had been the team's coach in 2001. But after leaving the cup in the first round and the second half of the season without a win, he had to leave in April 2013. The employment relationship with Heinz Hermann was terminated two months earlier; he is said to have not met the extended requirements profile of a sports director. His position was filled with Alex Frei , who had just ended his playing career at FC Basel, during which he also played for FCL, at the same time as the new coach dismissal . As a first official act, he appointed the Argentine-Swiss dual citizen Carlos Bernegger as the new head coach, who has family roots in Lucerne's Entlebuch . Under Bernegger, the team scored 20 out of 30 possible points in the remaining ten games. In the course of the season, the contract with the main sponsor Otto's was prematurely extended to 2015.

In the preparatory phase for the 2013/14 season , Frei found what he was looking for in the Lucerne veteran Thomas Wyss for a suitable assistant coach for Bernegger . He hired former FCL coach Andy Egli to replace the youngster Laurent Prince , who moved to the Swiss Football Association in the same position at the end of June . In December, Mike Hauser was replaced as President by Rudolf Stäger. The banker, who has lived in central Switzerland for many years, is the first to be fully employed with a managerial function. From a sporting point of view, the season with second place at the winter break was initially positive. Despite changing performances in the second half of the season, 4th place in the table and thus the Europa League qualification was achieved. In addition, they advanced to the semi-finals of the 2013/14 Swiss Cup , which were narrowly lost to FC Basel (0: 1).

The 2014/15 season got off to a bad start. In the Europa League qualification against FC St. Johnstone, for example, they were eliminated after a 1-1 draw in the penalty shoot-out. After eleven league games without a win, five draws and six defeats, Bernegger had to vacate his position as coach of the first team in October 2014. His successor was Markus Babbel . Despite two wins and two draws, the preliminary round ended last, two points behind FC Sion . As a result of the poor results, sports director Alex Frei resigned on the last match day of the preliminary round with immediate effect. During the winter break, Rolf Fringer was won over as the new head of sports. Roland Vrabec from FC St. Pauli also joined FC Luzern as assistant coach . The second half of the season ended with 10 wins, 4 draws and 4 defeats in second place in the second half of the table behind FC Basel and in fifth place. This was not enough to qualify for the Europa League, as FC Sion won the Cup final.

In the 2015/16 season , the preliminary round was completed with an excellent 4th place in the league and with the semi-finals in the Swiss Cup. Nevertheless, sports director Rolf Fringer was fired at the beginning of the new year. The reason given was the differing views on the future strategic direction of FC Luzern. The start of the second half of the season failed completely with three defeats in a row. Assistant coach Roland Vrabec , who was supposed to leave the club at the end of the season and whom the club management expressed their confidence in at the beginning of February, was released immediately at the end of February. The relationship of trust between Vrabec and head coach Babbel should no longer have existed for a further successful cooperation from the point of view of the club. After the turbulent start in the second half of the season, the FCL was able to recover thanks to the calm within the club and sticking to the head coach. With a good performance by the team and 28 points from the last 13 games, FC Luzern advanced to 3rd place, the fourth-best result in the club's history that was enough to qualify for the Europa League . On May 24, 2016 it was announced that the business management of FC Luzern will be reorganized. The tasks of management and the association's executive committee, previously performed by Ruedi Stäger in a 60 percent workload, are to be split up. A 100 percent employed CEO will now take over the management of the club, while the Presidium and FCL Holding AG will be merged. This would eliminate the regular mix-ups between the two executive committees and strengthen cooperation between the board of directors and club management. The holding company president Philipp Studhalter will now also be the club president. The newly created CEO position will be advertised.

In the season 2016/17 FC Luzern starts very strong with four wins from their first five games. In the Europa League qualification against the US Sassuolo Calcio , they were unfortunately eliminated after a 1: 1 in the first leg and 0: 3 in the second leg. Over 1000 people from Lucerne accompanied their team loudly and colorfully to Italy. In October 2016, the former player Marcel Kälin became the club's new CEO. The FCL finished the preliminary round with 4th place and the quarter-final qualification in the Swiss Cup. From the second half of the season onwards, more was put on their own young players. In the 28th round of the home game against FC St. Gallen , only players with a Swiss passport played at FC Luzern . After various unrest in and around the club and sporting ups and downs in the second half of the season, the season ended in 5th place, which meant the renewed Europa League qualification . In the Swiss Cup 2016/17 they were eliminated in the semifinals at FC Sion after a 0-0 penalty after 120 minutes.

In the 2017/18 season with only 2 wins after 13 rounds, FC Luzern found itself at the bottom of the table. In the Europa League qualification against NK Osijek , they were unfortunately eliminated with an overall result of 2: 3. In the Swiss Cup 2017/18 , FC Luzern was eliminated in the quarter-finals at FC Basel after a 1: 2. FC Luzern finished the preliminary round and 3 other victories in 9th place. On January 5, 2018, the club announced the dismissal of head coach Markus Babbel after more than 3 years in office due to internal differences. His assistant Patrick Rahmen also left the club. On January 9th, the former player Gerardo Seoane introduced Babbel's successor. After a spectacular comeback in the second half of the season with 10 wins and 34 points, FC Luzern finished the season in third place, which meant equalizing the fourth-best result in the club's history and renewed qualification for the Europa League . In addition, CEO Marcel Kälin resigned from his position on March 28, 2018.

For the 2018/19 season , René Weiler took over the position of head coach after Gerardo Seoane was surprisingly poached from BSC Young Boys after only half a season as Super League coach during the summer break. In the Europa League qualification against Olympiacos Piraeus they were eliminated with an overall result of 1: 7 without a chance. The FCL finished the preliminary round with 5th place and the quarter-final qualification in the Swiss Cup. On February 17, 2019, René Weiler was released after differences in athletic development. On February 21st, Thomas Häberli was introduced as the new head coach. With Häberli, FC Luzern reached the semi-finals in the Swiss Cup 2018/19 against FC Thun , where they lost 1-0 at home. The championship ended in 5th place, which meant the fourth Europa League qualification in a row.

Thomas Häberli was dismissed as trainer for the 2019/20 winter break. He was succeeded by Fabio Celestini , who had been dismissed from FC Lugano a few months earlier. Under the new trainer, the FCL became the best team after the Corona restart. Towards the end of the season, the team collapsed due to many injuries and a tight schedule, so that they slipped into the middle of the table.

Stages

Allmend Stadium (1934–2009)

FC Luzern played its home games at the Allmend stadium. The Allmend sports complex was built in 1934, consisting of several soccer fields and a main field with a small wooden grandstand. In the following years, sports facilities were changed and supplemented again and again. In 1957, for example, the grandstand was expanded to accommodate 2500 people. A major renovation took place between 1981 and 1983 with the renovation and new construction of the main grandstand and the new construction of the covered central grandstand (which was the standing ramp of the FCL fans). The last structural expansion took place in 1995 with the construction of the "LUMAG grandstand" (north grandstand, covered seats).

In the 1980s and early 1990s in particular, the Allmend was considered an “impregnable fortress” among opposing teams. The audience drove the team to victories and the championship title in 1989. There was international coverage of the fans of FC Luzern. The spectator stadium record is 26,100 from 1993 (game in the promotion / relegation round against FC Basel (4: 1)). The theoretical capacity on the Allmend was around 25,000 spectators. The association only allowed 13,000 spectators.

Swissporarena (since 2011)

"Sportarena Allmend Luzern" project

From 2007 the Allmend stadium could no longer meet the minimum requirements of the Swiss Football League . Since autumn 2005, the city of Lucerne and private investors have been holding talks about the construction of the Allmend stadium. After the direct award of a new stadium building with shell usage met with great political resistance, the Parliament of the City of Lucerne decided in September 2006 to launch an investor competition. A total of five competition entries were submitted, whereby the jury recommended in May 2007 that renegotiations be opened with the three winning projects. In September 2007 the city council (executive) decided to pursue the “KOI” project by Lucerne architects Daniele Marques and Iwan Bühler , which originally had already won first place , although the other two projects have already formally withdrawn.

In addition to the actual football stadium with around 17,000 seats, the construction of a sports building with a gym, indoor swimming pool and fitness center is also planned. The project development is carried out by the Halter companies . In order to cross-finance the stadium (in the sense of building lease interest), the project also provides for the construction of two high-rise residential buildings (approx. 88 and 77 meters). Since a zoning plan change was required for this project, the voters had to vote on the zoning plan change together with the project planning credit at the ballot box. In particular, the construction of the two houses met with great resistance from politics and the population. With a majority of approx. 54%, the voting population of the City of Lucerne decided on February 24, 2008 to change the zoning plan and thus to continue working on the “KOI” project.

On November 30, 2008, the electorate was able to vote in another referendum on the approval of the building rights contracts (for stadiums, sports buildings and residential buildings) and on the contributions to be paid by the public sector (for stadiums, indoor swimming pools, driveways / front zone). After a hard coordination battle between supporters and opponents, a majority of 55.1% yes-votes decided to implement the project. The start of construction was delayed by at least six months until the summer of 2009 due to objections to the design plan and the building permit that have now been resolved.

The demolition work began in August 2009 and the construction of the new Swissporarena as well as the two (long controversial) high-rise buildings and the sports hall in March 2010 . Until mid-2011, the FCL played in the Gersag Stadium in Emmenbrücke , where the existing small stadium was provisionally expanded to a capacity of 8,000 spectators.

The decision announced in December 2009 by President Walter Stierli to install the latest generation of artificial turf in the new stadium for economic reasons was revised about a year later due to the insight that natural turf is more suitable for its primary use as a football stadium.

FCL.RADIO

The blind radio FC Luzern was a project of the FC Luzern in cooperation with the blind organization Lucerne to convey the respective sporting event to blind and severely visually impaired people. The blind radio always broadcast live at home games and could be received around the stadium on 92.4 MHz.

From February 21, 2016, with the home game against FC St. Gallen, the FCL.Radio started again . All FC Luzern competition matches are broadcast live over the entire duration of the match on this channel. The FCL.Radio broadcasts exclusively digitally.

Further club sections

Women's football

Originally, FC Luzern Frauen formed the women's football department of FC Sursee . They were separated from the club on July 1, 2004 and founded as an independent club under the name SC LUwin.ch, making them the first pure women's football club in Switzerland. With the aim of improving the promotion of women's football in Central Switzerland , they were incorporated into the FCL as a section in 2011. With the same intention, the women's football department of SC Kriens was incorporated on July 1, 2014 , whereby the FCL women are represented under this name in the top division for the first time. Thanks to five championship titles (2002 to 2006) and four cup wins (2002, 2004 to 2006), the women's team is one of the most successful in Swiss women's football . In addition, famous players such as Lara Dickenmann and Ramona Bachmann launched their international careers at the club.

volleyball

FC Luzern Volleyball was founded in 1946, making it one of the oldest volleyball clubs in Switzerland. Today it consists of a men's and several women's teams. The greatest success is winning the championship title in 1959, the first ever to be awarded in Swiss women's volleyball. Nevertheless, after Concordia BTV Luzern and VBC Luzern, it is only the third most successful club in the city.

As of June 2015, FC Luzern provided both an NLA and an NLB team. However, these teams were withdrawn due to a reorientation in Lucerne volleyball after the founding of the new Volley Lucerne club in summer 2017.

Boccia

The FC Luzern boccia section was founded in 1931.
