René van Eck (born February 18, 1966 in Rotterdam ) is a Dutch football coach and former player .
Player career
As a player, Van Eck was a central defender . After moving from FC Luzern to 1. FC Nürnberg in December 1998, he made 16 appearances in the 1st Bundesliga in this position . After the relegation of 1. FC Nürnberg, he played there for another year in the 2. Bundesliga . Then van Eck went back to Switzerland to the B division FC Winterthur . After half a year he moved on to league rivals SC Kriens .
Coaching career
He began his coaching career as an assistant at his long-term club, FC Luzern , where he was head coach from 2003. His greatest success as a coach to date was in 2006 with the promotion of FC Luzern to the Super League , including a series of 31 games without defeat.
Due to differences of opinion between him and the club management of FC Lucerne regarding the new contract, he left the traditional Lucerne club at the end of the 2005/06 season. Van Eck then stayed fit at the Swiss third division club FC Brunnen. After a short detour to the Finnish club Inter Turku , with whom he managed to stay in the league, he coached FC Wohlen from November 2006 to May 2007 , with whom he narrowly escaped relegation. From June 2007 to May 2008 he coached FC Thun and was relegated from the Super League to the Challenge League at the end of the 2007/08 season . On May 23, 2008 he was released from FC Thun. Van Eck has been in possession of the UEFA Pro license since June 2007 and fulfills all of the SFV's requirements to be a coach in the Super League.
On September 25, 2008 van Eck became head coach of the third division club FC Carl Zeiss Jena . In January 2009 he extended his contract to summer 2011, but was then on leave on March 23, 2009 because of a series of defeats and the resulting risk of relegation for the FCC. On May 29, 2009, Carl Zeiss announced the return of van Eck, who still had an ongoing contract until June 30, 2011, as coach. On June 1, 2010, René van Eck asked for his part to terminate his contract with FC Carl Zeiss after a good season. That was complied with. At the beginning of the 2010/11 season, van Eck took over the U-19 team of his former club 1. FC Nürnberg , with which he had signed a two-year contract. In September 2012 he became the new coach of Alemannia Aachen as the successor to Ralf Außenem, who had recently been dismissed . There he signed a two-year contract on September 10, 2012. On May 8, 2013, van Eck announced that he would not extend his contract with Alemannia Aachen, which expired at the end of the season, for personal reasons.
From July 20, 2014 to 2015, van Eck coached the U-19 team of his former club Excelsior Rotterdam. In summer 2015 he took over FC Den Bosch , for whom he had played from 1986 to 1990, as head coach and was released again in February 2016.
At the beginning of 2017 he became a coach in the German regional league at Wacker Nordhausen . In April 2017, the club separated from him.
After almost a year without an employer, van Eck signed a contract with the Swiss first division club FC Zurich as assistant coach on February 21, 2018 .
