A center- back is a playing position in team sports such as hockey and soccer . The main task of this defender is to prevent opposing goals and to open the game from behind. The central defenders in football are usually physically relatively robust and tall in order to be able to win both duels on the ground and header duels .

The central defender mainly plays in the center, i.e. near the goal or penalty area, while the full-back tends to act on the outer lanes (wings). Well-known central defenders were / are: Lúcio , Fabio Cannavaro , Thiago Silva , Vincent Kompany , Alessandro Nesta , David Luiz , Carles Puyol , Jérôme Boateng , Mats Hummels , Phil Jones .
