After playing through all youth teams at Bayern Munich , he played for Borussia Dortmund for more than eight years from 2008 before returning to Bayern for three seasons in 2016. Life

Mats Hummels was born in 1988 as the son of sports journalist Ulla Holthoff and soccer player Hermann Hummels in Bergisch Gladbach, North Rhine-Westphalia . He first grew up in the Rhine-Main area , where his brother Jonas , who was two years younger , was born and where his father was a coach at SV Wehen and at 1. FSV Mainz 05 . After his father went to Bayern Munich as a junior coach, the family moved. Hummels attended the Neubiberg high school in the district of Munich , which he left early with a secondary school leaving certificate in view of his career as a professional footballer after the twelfth grade .

On June 15, 2015, Mats Hummels married his long-time girlfriend Cathy Fischer . Their son was born on January 11, 2018.

Club career

FC Bayern Munich

Mats Hummels played for Bayern Munich from the age of seven .

During the 2005/06 season , coach Hermann Gerland called Hummels, who played in the A-youth, to the regional league team for the first time . The following year he became a regular there. Then Felix Magath , the former coach of the Bundesliga team, became aware of him. Hummels took part in the preparation of the professional team for the 2006/07 season and played against FC Schalke 04 in the League Cup semi-finals . As a result, Hummels was given a professional contract that ran from January 1, 2007. On May 19, 2007, the last day of the season, he made his Bundesliga debut in a 5-2 home win over 1. FSV Mainz 05 - on in the 52nd minute for Martín Demichelis .

After Hummels was not used in the first half of the 2007/08 season and only played in the regional league, he was loaned to Borussia Dortmund until June 30, 2009 during the winter break . He played his first competitive game for Borussia on January 29, 2008 in the DFB Cup eighth final against Werder Bremen , when he was substituted on shortly before the end of the game. On February 16, 2008, he made his debut for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga in a 2-0 away win in Cottbus and was then used regularly. With BVB he was in the DFB Cup final in Berlin on April 19, 2008 , which Bayern Munich won 2-1 after extra time. He himself was part of the squad, but was not used.

The 2008/09 season began Hummels in the starting lineup, but could not play through the first half of the season due to injuries. In January 2009 he pulled a partial tear of the right inner and outer ligament in the ankle during an indoor tournament. A month later, when he got back into training, the same outer ligament tore completely, so that he was out for the rest of the Bundesliga season and was only back on the bench on the last day of the game. In February 2009, however, BVB and FC Bayern Munich agreed on a final change. Here, Hummels' loan contract, which was running until the end of the season, was terminated. He then got a new contract from Borussia. At the beginning of the 2009/10 season he was symptom-free again. In the first two games of the season he came as a substitute for the train, on the third match day he had to replace the injured Tinga in the fourth minute and was from then on to the team of the team. At the end of the season he qualified with BVB for participation in the Europa League.

In the 2010/11 season , Hummels secured the unofficial title of autumn champion with BVB with 43 points after 17 games on matchday 15 ; on the 32nd matchday the team was mathematically established as the German champions . With 22 goals conceded, BVB was by far the best defense in the league. Hummels received the best marks of all Bundesliga players of the season from the sports magazine Kicker . With five goals, Hummels was together with Georg Niedermeier from VfB Stuttgart the most dangerous defender of the season.

In the next season , BVB had already conceded six goals after six match days; In the Champions League , twelve goals conceded in the six games of the group stage meant early elimination. Nevertheless, they started again in the league and did not lose a game from the seventh game day (with five draws). The key game was the 1-0 win against FC Bayern Munich , which was still top of the table after the first half of the season. In addition, at the end of the day Borussia conceded 25 goals again, one of the three best defenses in the league. Hummels and BVB thus defended the German championship title from the previous year. In the DFB-Pokal they reached the final, which was won 5-2 against runner-up Bayern Munich and made the double perfect.

In the season 2012/13 , BVB was Hummels runner and reached the Champions League the final , the one against Bayern Munich with 1: lost second In the following season, Hummels was again runner-up with BVB and reached the final in the DFB Cup , which was lost 2-0 to Bayern Munich.

Hummels has been Borussia Dortmund 's team captain since the 2014/15 season .

Return to FC Bayern Munich

during training on the grounds of FC Bayern Munich (2018)

On April 28, 2016, the BVB said in a ad-hoc announcement with that Hummels had expressed the intention for the season 2016/17 for FC Bayern Munich , for which he had already been active from 1995 to 2008 change to want. On May 10th, FC Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund agreed to change the player to the German record champions. Hummels signed a five-year contract two days after he lost the cup final with Borussia Dortmund to his new club. He played his first competitive game on August 14, 2016 in a 2-0 victory in the DFL Supercup against his former club. He scored his first Bundesliga goal for Bayern Munich on November 26, 2016 against Bayer 04 Leverkusen with a 2-1 winner in the 56th minute with a header . At the end of the season he won the German championship with FC Bayern .

Return to Borussia Dortmund

On June 19, 2019, Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern agreed on a return from Hummels to the German runner-up. The mandatory medical check and the signature of the contract followed on June 28, 2019. Under head coach Favre , he was immediately placed in central defense and was appointed second representative of team captain Marco Reus . The Rhinelander only missed five competitive games due to illness and suspension, in the remaining 41 he was always in the starting eleven. As the "defense chief", Hummels filled the role that Marcel Schmelzer had played before him and which had fallen to Łukasz Piszczek after his retirement . He was also able to represent captain Marco Reus, who was again injured for a longer period, as a leader on the field. With 41 goals conceded, BVB, which also scored the second-most goals at the same time, was also able to place itself in the top 5 of the Bundesliga.

Mats Hummels was discovered late for the DFB junior team and made his debut on March 27, 2007 under coach Dieter Eilts in the U21 national team , which won 1-0 against the Czech team in Düsseldorf . He took part in the U21 European Championship in Sweden under national coach Horst Hrubesch and, after a brief stint in the semifinals against Italy, also completed the final , in which the German selection defeated the English 4-0.

On May 6, 2010 he was nominated by national coach Joachim Loew for the game against the selection of Malta on May 13, 2010 for the first time for the senior national team ; when he came on for Serdar Tasci in the second half , he played his first international match . However, the World Cup came too early for him and he was not considered.

For the first international match after the World Cup on November 17, 2010, he and his team players Marcel Schmelzer , Mario Götze and Kevin Großkreutz were nominated for the squad against the Swedish team and played the entire 90 minutes. He played three more international test matches in the national jersey before playing in his first of four qualifying matches for the 2012 European Championship on June 3, 2011 . On May 26, 2012 he scored his first international goal with the goal to make it 1: 2 in the 3: 5 defeat against the selection of Switzerland in the immediate EM preparation. He was then taken into account for the EM squad .

Surprisingly, Hummels was in the starting line-up from the start of the tournament, as the favored Per Mertesacker was not fit enough after long injuries and showed a convincing performance. As a result, Hummels played in all five European Championship games of the German national team for the full 90 minutes. While he was often criticized before the European Championship for his fluctuating performance compared to the club, he was considered one of the best German players at the tournament. Because of his strong performance, he was the biggest positive surprise of the tournament for Zinédine Zidane . He had the second best duel rate of all EM players in the preliminary round and got by without a foul. He injured himself in the international test match against England on November 19, 2013 and was out until January 2014. Shortly afterwards, he suffered another injury and was forced to take a break until February.

Hummels took part in the 2014 World Cup with the DFB selection . He headed the 2-0 win in the 4-0 opener against Portugal . In the quarter-finals against France he also headed the winning goal to make it 1-0 and was named "Man of the Match". In the final against Argentina , won 1-0 afterwards , he played for 120 minutes and became world champion with the team.

At the European Championship in France, he was included in the German squad , although he had torn a muscle fiber in the DFB Cup final shortly before the nomination date. In the first European Championship game against Ukraine he was paused, from the second game he was part of the starting line-up. The quarter-final against Italy was his 50th international match. Germany advanced on penalties; Hummels converted his penalty. However, he also received his second yellow card in the tournament and was suspended in the semifinals. It was the first yellow card suspension in his career. Germany lost the game against hosts France and were eliminated.

At the 2018 World Cup , Hummels criticized the style of play of the German national team in an interview after the 0-1 opening defeat against Mexico . Among other things, he criticized the fact that the protection did not work and that he and his teammate Jérôme Boateng were often left alone in the back. He had already addressed this internally before, but it wasn't really fruitful. Hummels' violent criticism was then also criticized by the media, for example as a "public scolding of colleagues". Hummels rejected this accusation, however, that he had talked about matters of content, but that it was always pretended to insult someone. For the second game against Sweden , in which Germany scored the 2-1 winner at the last minute, Hummels was out due to problems with a cervical vertebra. For the third group game against South Korea , Hummels was ready to go again. After a poor performance and a 2-0 defeat in this game, Germany was eliminated from the tournament as bottom of the group F. After this game, a subsequent interview with Hummels again attracted a lot of attention, for example, Hummels said that the national team's last convincing game was in autumn 2017.

After an unfortunate 2-1 defeat against world champions France in the Nations League , which was preceded by a 3-0 defeat against the Netherlands and a 0-0 defeat against France, Hummels attracted attention in an interview in which he stated that the The national team "haven't played a bad game since the World Cup, but [they] haven't gotten any results," while other national players were more critical of the national team's performance. While Hummels was nicknamed "The Chief Critic" by the press during the World Cup, he has now been called "The Chief Debtor".

In March 2019, Löw announced a change in the national team and announced that Mats Hummels, Jérôme Boateng and Thomas Müller will no longer be part of the DFB squad. Löw was often criticized for the timing, the finality and the manner in which the decision was announced.

Style of play

Hummels is considered to be capable of jumping, strong headers and dangerous goals. Its calmness on the ball and the security that it also exudes in pressure situations are praised. His strengths include his positional play, through which he closes gaps on the defensive and intercepts balls, and a high level of combat strength. He is highly trained technically and tactically and is known for precise passes to teammates. This also includes his vertical play. Hummels is considered a very fair athlete.

Others

Hummels is UNICEF sponsor and is committed to the children's aid organization. He also supports the Common Goal initiative .

Hummels was featured on the German cover of the video game FIFA 12 together with Lukas Podolski .
