Bastian Schweinsteiger (born August 1, 1984 in Kolbermoor ) is a former German soccer player . Active in the German national team from 2004 to 2016 , he became world champion with it in Brazil in 2014 and was then its team captain for two years .

Schweinsteiger was initially used as an offensive player on the right or left wing and was retrained as a defensive midfielder in the 2009/10 season by the then Bayern coach Louis van Gaal . At the end of his career, he also played as a central defender in the USA.

childhood and education

The son of an entrepreneur who runs a sports shop in Oberaudorf , Upper Bavaria and who used to be a soccer player in Austria , grew up with his two years and five months older brother Tobias , who was a professional soccer player in the 2nd Bundesliga . Bastian Schweinsteiger attended the Dientzenhof state secondary school in Brannenburg ( district of Rosenheim ), then he attended the municipal Adalbert-Stifter secondary school in the Munich district of Haidhausen , which he graduated with a secondary school leaving certificate. He completed vocational training as an office clerk before devoting himself entirely to his professional career as a football player.

As a child, Schweinsteiger was also a talented skier and often met Felix Neureuther at races , whom he even defeated several times.

Club career

youth

Schweinsteiger started playing football at FV Oberaudorf at the age of three . Via TSV 1860 Rosenheim , for which he played from 1992 to 1998, he joined the youth department of FC Bayern Munich in 1998. In 2001 he won the B-Junior Championship and a year later the A-Junior Championship . From the season 2001/02 he was a member of the Regional -Mannschaft, where he on March 2, 2002 - in the 89th minute for Barbaros Barut substitute - the 0: 0 against SpVgg Ansbach made his debut and until 2004 34 games (two Goals).

FC Bayern Munich

In 2002 he joined the professional squad and had his first competitive appearance - on substitute in the 76th minute for Mehmet Scholl - on November 13, 2002 in the preliminary round of the Champions League in a 3: 3 against RC Lens . The following month he received a professional contract and came on December 7, 2002 to his Bundesliga debut in the 3-0 away win against VfB Stuttgart , when he came on in the 83rd minute for Niko Kovač . He scored his first two competitive goals on February 4, 2003 in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup in an 8-0 home win against 1. FC Köln .

On April 27, 2008, Schweinsteiger wore the captain's armband for the first time briefly in a game for the first team of Bayern Munich in the 4-1 home game against VfB Stuttgart in the absence of Oliver Kahn and Lúcio and after replacing Willy Sagnol . After Schweinsteiger was initially used in the left and right midfield, the new coach Louis van Gaal put him in the central defensive midfield for the first time in the 2009/10 season for the first time. He has been in this position since then and initially played alongside the then team captain Mark van Bommel .

In the 2010/11 season , Schweinsteiger became more and more playmaker for FCB and distinguished himself with important goals. He scored both goals in the second main round of the DFB Cup in a 2-1 win against Werder Bremen , through which the Munich team reached the second round . After the 3-0 win on December 11, 2010 in the home game against FC St. Pauli , he announced via the stadium microphone that he had extended his contract with FCB for another five years until 2016. When his teammate Philipp Lahm became team captain in early 2011, Schweinsteiger became his deputy.

On November 2, 2011, Schweinsteiger suffered a broken collarbone in the fourth group game in a 3-2 home win against SSC Napoli , which forced him to pause for the rest of 2011. On February 8, 2012, he was injured again in the DFB Cup quarter-finals in a 2-0 win against VfB Stuttgart and was out for several weeks. After his return on April 25, 2012, he helped Bayern reach the final against Chelsea in the Allianz Arena at home with the decisive goal on penalties in the Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid . In the final penalty shootout , he hit the post; Chelsea FC won the title.

Schweinsteiger during training in Doha (2013)

On April 6, 2013 (28th matchday), his 1-0 winning goal with a hoe in the away game against Eintracht Frankfurt prematurely decided the championship . On May 25, 2013, Schweinsteiger and FCB won the 2012/13 Champions League 2-1 against Borussia Dortmund at London's Wembley Stadium . By winning the DFB Cup final on June 1, 2013, he became the first German soccer club to win the big European triple in men's soccer with FCB. As a result of these titles and a personally strong season, Schweinsteiger was voted Germany's Footballer of the Year in July 2013 with 17 percent of the votes cast . However, only 527 of the 3,100 sports journalists called for election had taken part in the vote.

On August 9, 2013, Schweinsteiger played his 300th Bundesliga game at the start of the season in a 3-1 win at home against Borussia Mönchengladbach and before that, on September 29, 2012, his 400th competitive game for FC Bayern Munich. On August 30, 2013 , he won the UEFA Super Cup with FCB for the first time against Chelsea, but was not used due to an injury.

Schweinsteiger was before the season 2013/14 at the ankle surgery. He was operated on again on November 13, 2013 because of chronic pain. On February 12, 2014 Schweinsteiger returned to the team in the quarter-final match for the DFB Cup against Hamburger SV and was substituted on for Philipp Lahm in the 65th minute. His return to the Bundesliga followed on February 15, 2014 in a 4-0 home win against SC Freiburg with a substitution for Xherdan Shaqiri in the 62nd minute. On March 25, 2014 (27th matchday), he again secured the championship prematurely with FC Bayern, at the earliest point in time in the Bundesliga. He missed the final of the DFB Cup on May 17, 2014, which was won 2-0 against Borussia Dortmund after extra time, due to injury; but he rose to the record cup winner with seven titles won.

Due to problems with the patellar tendon on his knee, Schweinsteiger had been out since the beginning of the 2014/15 season . He made his season debut on November 22, 2014 (12th matchday) in a 4-0 win at home against TSG Hoffenheim .

With the early win of the championship on April 26, 2015 (30th match day), Schweinsteiger advanced to become the sole record holder with 15 titles from championships and cup successes. On the last match day he played his 500th and last competitive game for FC Bayern in front of a home crowd on May 23, 2015 against 1. FSV Mainz 05 and scored his 45th Bundesliga goal to make it 2-0; This puts him in 22nd place in the club's internal statistics - one goal ahead of Michael Ballack , Michael Rummenigge and Franz Beckenbauer .

On August 28, 2018, he was officially bid farewell to his current club, Chicago Fire , in the Allianz Arena . He played one half for both clubs and scored the goal for Bayern Munich to make it 4-0.

On July 11, 2015, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge , CEO of FC Bayern München AG, announced Schweinsteiger's immediate move to Manchester United at a press conference . Schweinsteiger had asked him in a personal interview the day before for a smooth change and wanted to try something new before the end of his career. Rummenigge had assured Schweinsteiger that after the end of his active career he would host a farewell game in Munich. Schweinsteiger met his former coach Louis van Gaal at the English record champions and signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2018. He scored his first goal in the Premier League on November 28, 2015 (14th matchday) in a 1-1 away game against eventual champions Leicester City with the equalizer just before half-time whistle.

The new coach José Mourinho no longer planned with Schweinsteiger as part of the squad at the beginning of the 2016/17 season and transferred him to the reserve team at the beginning of August 2016. A short time later, Schweinsteiger announced his resignation from the national team. In September 2016, he was reported at least as a substitute for the official league squad, but not for the UEFA Europa League . He then had to continue to train with the youngsters before Mourinho allowed him to train with the first team again in November 2016. On November 30, Schweinsteiger played his first competitive game in 255 days when he was substituted on in the closing stages of his team's 4-1 victory in the quarter-finals of the League Cup . For the knockout phase he was nominated for the Europa League squad. Schweinsteiger left Manchester for the USA for the winter break. Overall, he was used twice in the FA Cup and once each in the League Cup and in the Europa League in the 2016/17 season . In the play-offs they were eliminated in the knockout round against the New York Red Bulls . Schweinsteiger came to a total of 25 MLS appearances, in which he scored a hit - in addition to an appearance in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup . In addition, Schweinsteiger led the MLS selection in the MLS All-Star Game against Real Madrid as captain on the field.

At the EM 2008 Schweinsteiger was not part of the starting line-up at the beginning of the tournament. In the second group game against Croatia he saw the red card after an assault and was missing in the last group game. In the quarter-finals , he was in the starting line-up for the first time and, as in 2006, was involved in all goals against Portugal: He scored a goal himself and prepared the goals for Miroslav Klose and Michael Ballack . Like two years before, he was voted "Man of the Game" in the game against the Portuguese.

In the first international match after the European Championship on August 20, 2008, Schweinsteiger took over the captain's armband for the first time from the replaced Miroslav Klose . On May 6, 2010 he was appointed to the squad for the 2010 World Cup by national coach Joachim Loew , where he was deputy captain behind Philipp Lahm . At this World Cup, Schweinsteiger and his team again came third. He was elected to the All-Star-Team and nominated as one of ten players for the "Golden Ball" as the best player of the tournament, but got nothing in the election. In the 4-0 victory in the quarter-final against Argentina , he gave two assists and was voted "Man of the Match". At the Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine, he and his team were eliminated in the semi-finals against Italy.

On July 13, 2014, Schweinsteiger became the soccer world champion after beating the Argentine national team 1-0 . His performance in the 2014 final is considered one of the best of his entire career. He remained a substitute until the quarter-finals against Italy. There he missed on penalties; Nevertheless, the team moved into the semi-finals against France, in which he was in the tournament for the first time in the tournament after the failure of Sami Khedira . Schweinsteiger quote on a soccer ball - detail of a modern Christmas crib in Heidelberg

At the beginning of his career, Schweinsteiger was often called "Sebastian Schweinsteiger". When asked by a reporter, he stated that his first name was "Bastian".

He is enthusiastic about basketball , during his time in Munich he regularly attended the games of the basketball department of FC Bayern Munich and is an honorary member of the "Bigreds", a fan club for Bayern basketball players. He is close friends with the German professional basketball player Steffen Hamann . He often shows his connection to this sport after goals by imitating a jump shot on the basket while cheering.

Schweinsteiger was in a relationship with the model Sarah Brandner from 2007 to September 2014 . In February 2015, his lawyer announced that Schweinsteiger and the Serbian tennis player Ana Ivanović had a “solid couple relationship”. The couple got married in Venice on July 12, 2016 . In March 2018 and August 2019, the couple had a son each.

A quote from Schweinsteiger can be read on a fair- produced, internationally approved tournament football specially made for the 2006 World Cup : "I just believe that God is in the game of my life."

The Chinese toy manufacturer Dragon in Dreams released a detailed action figure of a Wehrmacht soldier, whose face is apparently modeled on Schweinsteiger, which caused a stir in the media in 2015. Although the soldier doll was sold under the name "Bastian", the manufacturer described this as a coincidence, as it was simply intended to depict a "typical German". After a lawsuit, the figure disappeared from the range.

A few days after retiring from active sport in October 2019, the ARD announced that Schweinsteiger will be accompanying live broadcasts of football matches as an expert for the next three years up to and including the 2022 World Cup in Qatar . He made his first appearance on July 4, 2020 at the DFB Cup final alongside Matthias Opdenhövel .

In 2020 the documentary “Schw31ns7eiger: Memories - From Beginnings to Legends” produced by Til Schweiger was released on the streaming service Amazon Prime Video . The numbers in the film title refer to his shirt numbers for FC Bayern Munich (31) and for the national team (7).
