history
The championship was first played in 1969. In the first three events, only the champions of the five regional associations qualified . From 1972 on, the champions of the regional associations took part in the championship. Initially, the teams played against each other in preliminary and final tournaments. From 1975 onwards, the individual knockout rounds were played back and forth. From 1992 the champions of the new federal states took part. With the introduction of the regional league , the field of participants was reduced to eight teams. In 2004 the A-Junioren-Bundesliga was introduced, whereby the field of participants was reduced to four teams.
Since the 2014/15 season, the German champions qualified for the first time for the following season of the UEFA Youth League .
mode
The champions of the three seasons of the A-Juniors Bundesliga qualify for the A-Junior Championship . Then there is the season runner-up, whose participants have been most successful in the finals over the past three years. This is determined using a performance table. Three points are awarded for the championship, two points for participation in the finals and one point for participation in the semi-finals. If a relay has two finalists in a season, only the points of the better team will be counted. In the event of a tie, the most recent result decides.
The championship is played in the knockout system . The semi-finals will be played in a two-legged manner. If there is a tie after the first and second leg, the goal difference decides. If no winner has been determined after the second leg without extra time, this will be determined by a penalty shoot-out . The final is played in one game. This game features overtime and penalty shoot-outs if necessary.

Remarkable
- So far, two amateur clubs have managed to win the championship. Hertha Zehlendorf was the first to succeed in 1970. The second amateur championship was FC Augsburg in 1993. In the 1970 final, Hertha Zehlendorf and TuS Altrip faced two amateur clubs. The first double - the championship for the A and B juniors - was made by Bayer 05 Uerdingen in 1987 . Borussia Dortmund reached five championships in a row between 1994 and 1998.
- Before VfL Bochum became the first official German A youth champion in 1969, there was already a German A youth champion in Hamborn 07 in 1938. Due to the progressive disempowerment of the DFB during the Nazi era , this competition was organized by the Hitler Youth . The team from the north of Duisburg won the final on August 28, 1938 2-1 against Franconia Nuremberg in front of 50,000 spectators in the Frankfurt Waldstadion . In the competitions from 1939 to 1941, club teams were no longer allowed to participate, but so-called "ban teams", so to speak, selection teams. The other title holders were the selections Duisburg-Nord (1939), Oberhausen (1940) and Herne (1941).
- From the new federal states, FC Hansa Rostock became the first club to become German champions in 2010.
