The 21st major league soccer season began on March 6, 2016 with the regular season . This lasts until October 23, after which the play-offs will be played. There are 20 teams in the league, 17 from the United States and three from Canada . The defending champions of the MLS Cup are the Portland Timbers , the Supporters' Shield are the New York Red Bulls .
Changes compared to the 2015 season
Games
- There was an interruption in all league games from June 2, 2016 to June 14, 2016. The reason for this was the Copa América Centenario 2016 .
- On the last day of the regular season, all games were played on the same day and at the same time.

The 17 US MLS teams competed in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2016 , while the three Canadian MLS teams contested the 2016 Canadian Championship . The two tournaments are the cup rounds of the USA and Canada, which are played in the knockout system. The winners qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League .
FC Dallas won the US Open Cup. Toronto FC was successful at the Canadian Championship.

MLS All-Star Game
The 2016 MLS All-Star Game was played on June 28, 2016 at Avaya Stadium in San José, California . Here a selection of the Major League Soccer league met the English Premier League club Arsenal FC . The game ended 1: 2 for the team from London.
