Major League Soccer 2016

The 22nd major league soccer season began on March 3, 2017 with the regular season . This ended on October 22, 2017, then the play-offs were played, which culminated on December 9, 2017 with the final of the MLS Cup. There were 22 teams in the league, 19 from the United States and three from Canada . The defending champion of the MLS Cup is the Seattle Sounders , the Supporters' Shield of FC Dallas .

Changes compared to the 2016 season

Two new teams took part in Major League Soccer. Atlanta United started in the Eastern Conference, Minnesota United in the Western Conference.

CAN Toronto FC, Vancouver Whitecaps and Montreal Impact cannot qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League via Major League Soccer because the three teams come from Canada and the starting places are allocated by state. If the teams finish the season on a qualifying place for the Champions League, these starting places are automatically assigned to the next lower team. The three Canadian teams can only qualify for this competition through the Canadian Championship .

The 19 US MLS teams will take part in the 2017 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup , while the three Canadian MLS teams will contest the 2017 Canadian Championship . The two tournaments are the cup rounds of the USA and Canada, which are played in the knockout system. The winners qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League .

MLS All-Star Game

The 2017 MLS All-Star Game was played on August 2, 2017 at Soldier Field in Chicago , Illinois. A selection of the Major League Soccer league met the Spanish Primera División Club Real Madrid . The game ended 1-1, with the Madrid team winning the game 4-2 on penalties.
