The TCF Bank Stadium is a college football - stadium on the campus of the University of Minnesota in the US city of Minneapolis in the state of Minnesota . It was opened on 12 September 2009 and is the home stadium of the Minnesota Golden Gophers , the NCAA - football team of the University of the Big Ten Conference (B1G). For the 2014 and 2015 seasons , it also served as a temporary venue for the Minnesota Vikings from the National Football League (NFL), whose new stadium, US Bank Stadium , was still under construction.

history

The stadium is the third on the university campus and the fourth that the UM uses for football. The previous venues were Northrop Field, Memorial Stadium and the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome . Due to the planned demolition of the Metrodome, the Gophers, the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Twins who used this arena were forced to build new stadiums. The TCF Bank Stadium was completed first and saw the first home game of the Golden Gophers on September 12, 2009 in a 20:13 win over the Air Force Falcons of the United States Air Force Academy .

The TCF Bank Stadium is horseshoe- shaped, offers 50,805 seats and most of the stands are uncovered. The construction cost 303.3 million US dollars . The possibility of future expansion by 30,000 to 80,000 places is planned. It is home to the largest locker rooms in college and professional football and also has one of the largest video walls in the United States .

For the Minnesota Vikings, the stadium was modified in the summer of 2014 for seven million US dollars. There were u. a. Steel stands with 1,720 seats were set up on the west side and a new playing field surface with turf heating was installed. For this purpose, plastic pipes with a length of 38 miles (45 kilometers) were laid. In addition, there is the color redesign of the stadium for the games of the Golden Gophers (maroon and gold) and the Vikings (purple, gold, white). In the boxes, heaters were installed under the ceiling and the sanitary facilities changed. 120 vending machines have been set up where you can also buy beer. The number of entrances has been increased from six to nine due to the higher security requirements of the NFL, so that there are no longer waiting times at the entrance. An antenna system was installed in the stadium that enables visitors to use mobile phones ( 3G , 4G and LTE ). With the additional grandstands, the stadium offers 52,525 seats.

In the seasons 2017 and 2018 contributed Minnesota United , the new franchise of Major League Soccer (MLS), temporarily its home games at TCF Bank Stadium from. For the 2019 season , the team moved to Allianz Field with around 20,000 seats, which cost 200 million euros to build.

design

The complex has a horseshoe shape which, according to the architects, should provide a traditional college atmosphere ("traditional collegiate look and feel"). It is built in an east-west orientation, reminiscent of the Memorial Stadium and offers a view of downtown Minneapolis.

Upon completion, the University of Minnesota announced that the new building had been awarded the Silver LEED certificate , making it the first football stadium to be LEED certified.
