The 24th Major League Soccer season began on March 2, 2019 with the regular season and ended with the MLS Cup final on November 10, 2019. 24 teams took part in the league, 21 of which were from the United States States , three from Canada . The Seattle Sounders won the season and their second title since 2016 by bringing in the new edition of the finals of 2016 and 2017 the Toronto FC beat. The Supporters' Shield was won by Los Angeles FC .
Changes compared to the 2018 season
- The FC Cincinnati took part in the Major League Soccer as the 24th franchise.
- The play-off format has been changed. From now on, seven teams per conference qualified for the play-offs, the rounds of which are only played in a knockout game , in which the team with the better placement has home rights in the regular season. The first of the conferences moved directly into the conference semifinals and had a week off ( Bye Week ). There he meets the winner from the game fourth against fifth. This should shorten the play-off phase and make it more exciting.
Season course
While last year's champions Atlanta United were eliminated in the semi-finals for the championship, the Seattle Sounders and Toronto FC reached the final, as they did two years earlier. After 2016 , Seattle was able to win its second league title.
The Mexican Carlos Vela ( Los Angeles FC ) broke with his 34 goals in the regular season the first in the pre-season record set by Josef Martínez , who 31 times had met.
Participating teams
In the 2019 season, 24 franchises took part in Major League Soccer. 21 of the 24 franchises were located in the United States and three in Canada . The teams marked with a blue dot on the map shared by the Mississippi River played in the Western, those marked with a red dot in the Eastern Conference.
