The Columbus Crew Soccer Club , in German-speaking countries known as the Columbus Crew , is a franchise of professional football - League Major League Soccer (MLS) from Columbus , Ohio . The franchise was founded in 1994 and began operating in the 1996 premiere season . The team is one of the ten founding members of the MLS.

The home games have been played in the Mapfre Stadium , the first pure football stadium built by an MLS club , since 1999 .

The team has so far won the MLS Cup , the final of the play-offs. The best team of the regular season was the crew in 2004, 2008 and 2009. In 2002 the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup was won.

history

The franchise is one of the ten founding members of the MLS in 1996. In 1998 the crew reached the final of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup . Originally the final, in which the crew met the Chicago Fire , was to be played in Virginia Beach . Due to a hurricane , the game was postponed and moved to Soldier Field , the then Chicago Fire stadium. Chicago won 2-1.

Between 1997 and 1999 the crew reached the semi-finals of the play-offs three times in a row, but missed the jump into the MLS Cup each time . After a short period of weakness, the club reached the semi-finals of the championship again in 2002, where New England Revolution had to be narrowly defeated. In the same season, the crew won the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup by beating the Los Angeles Galaxy 1-0 in the final . In 2004 the crew won the MLS Supporters' Shield as the team with the highest points in the regular season . In the playoffs they lost to New England in the quarterfinals.

In the last seasons of 2005 and 2006, the team finished last and in 2007 the penultimate place in the Eastern Conference. The number of spectators also fell as a result of the sporty downturn.

In 2006 the team owner Lamar Hunt passed away . His son, Clark Hunt, has been running the club ever since.

Columbus Crew won the MLS Cup 2008 with a 3-1 win against New York Red Bulls on November 23, 2008. In the regular season, the team was able to achieve first place in the Eastern Conference and the MLS Supporter's Shield as the best on points at both conferences win. The goal scorers in the final in Carson (California) were Alejandro Moreno , Chad Marshall and Frankie Hejduk .

For the 2009 season, Sigi Schmid , who has coached Columbus since 2005, switched to the newly founded Seattle Sounders franchise . The new coach was the former Polish international Robert Warzycha . Warzycha was active as a player for the crew from 1996 to 2002. With the team he won his first coaching title in 2009. Columbus took first place in the Eastern Conference and was awarded the MLS Supporter's Shield as the best team of the regular season. In the subsequent play-offs they lost to Real Salt Lake in the conference semifinals.

Also in the 2010 season, the crew was one of the most successful teams in the MLS. The team around coach Robert Warzycha reached second place in the Eastern Conference and was thus able to qualify for the play-offs and US Open Cup 2011. In the play-offs, however, the team was eliminated in the quarterfinals against the Colorado Rapids in the final penalty shoot-out. In the US Open Cup, Columbus made it to the final, in which they were defeated by the Seattle Sounders. At the end of the season, the previous top performer of the team, Guillermo Barros Schelotto , left the crew for Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata .

Columbus Crew fans protest against the proposed move to Austin, Texas in May 2018

After a disappointing 2013 season, Gregg Berhalter took over the position of coach and sports director. This led the team to 3rd place in the Eastern Conference in 2014 and reached the Conference semifinals in the play-offs. In the US Open Cup they were eliminated in the round of 16.

In October 2014, the team's name was changed to Columbus Crew Soccer Club. The logo has also been redesigned.

In October 2017, the owner's plans to relocate the franchise to Austin , Texas for the 2019 season were announced , whereupon a resistance formed under the motto #SaveTheCrew . In October 2018, negotiations between Precourt Sports Ventures and a group of investors led by Jimmy Haslam , owner of the Cleveland Browns , his wife Dee Haslam and Pete Edwards, former team doctor, about the purchase of the crew became known. The MLS then guaranteed Precourt Sports Ventures an expansion team in Austin by the 2021 season at the latest , if the negotiations were successful. On January 1, 2019, the rights to the Columbus Crew were finally transferred to the investor group. On January 15, 2019, Major League Soccer announced FC Austin as the 27th franchise for the 2021 season.

Stadion

From 1996 to 1999, all home games were played at Ohio Stadium , which is located on the Ohio State University campus . This is where the games of the Ohio State Buckeyes college football team are usually played.

On May 5, 1999, the then Columbus Crew Stadium was opened. This stadium was designed as a pure football stadium , making it the first of its kind in the United States. Since March 2015 it has been sponsored by the Mapfre Stadium .

The new owners plan to build a new stadium in the downtown Arena District, which already houses the Nationwide Arena and Huntington Park, home of the Columbus Clippers and Columbus Blue Jackets .

organization

owner

In 1996 the US sports official Lamar Hunt took over the franchise. Hunt died in 2006 and his son, Clark Hunt , took over the ownership. On July 30, 2013 Precourt Sports Ventures LLC took over the rights to the franchise. The company is led by Anthony Precourt, an Ohio investment manager. On January 1, 2019, Jimmy Haslam , owner of the Cleveland Browns , his wife Dee Haslam and Pete Edwards took over the franchise to prevent relocation to Austin , Texas .

management

In addition to the owner group around owner Anthony Precourt, the former Canadian soccer player Pat Onstad has been heading the sporting department of the franchise on an interim basis since 2018. The president is Tim Bezbatchenko, who is responsible for the sporting and financial affairs of the franchise.

Fans and rivals

Fan groups

The club has three major fan groups with Crew Supporters Union , Hudson Street Hooligans and La Turbina Amarila . Since 2008 these have been gathering in the eastern north curve, which is called as a reminiscence of Columbus 'German roots' north corner .

Rivalries

Real rivalries with other MLS teams have not yet developed. Since 2008, however, the Trillium Cup has been played between the Columbus Crew and Toronto FC. The name is derived from the forest lily, a flower that is the official flower of the Canadian province of Ontario and the official wildflower of the US state Ohio.

These annual games were agreed by the two mayors of the cities. The losing mayor must wear the jersey of the winning team. The Columbus Crew has won all games so far.

Youth and development

Crew Soccer Academy

The Crew Soccer Academy is the Columbus Crew's youth development program. It is divided into the age groups U-14, U16 and U-18. These youth teams play in the leagues of the US Soccer Development Academy. This is supported by programs such as the Crew Pre-Academy (boys) and the Crew Juniors (girls), where girls and boys teams from U-12 to U-18 are based. There are also other youth football clubs from the region that are affiliated with this program.

USL partnership

After the MLS Reserve Division has been dissolved, partnerships with USL Pro teams will be possible . In the 2014 season there was a partnership with the Dayton Dutch Lions . A total of five players were loaned to the then USL Pro franchise. Later there was a partnership with Austin Aztex FC . The crew currently has no partner in the USL Championship.
