Ricardo Anthony Clark (born February 10, 1983 in Atlanta , Georgia ) is an American football player in the position of midfielder .
Career
Youth and amateur football
Clark began his active career as a football player with AFC Lightning and later moved to St. Pius X Catholic High School , a high school in the Archdiocese of Atlanta in DeKalb County, Georgia . At high school he was able to celebrate some successes, such as being elected Georgia State Player of the Year in 2001 or winning the championship title in 1999 and 2001.
In 2001 he moved to Furman University in Greenville , South Carolina . In his first year he came to 14 missions and one assist ; however, he could not play through the entire season due to an injury. The following year went much better. In 2002 he won the championship with the soccer team at the university and was elected to the NSCAA First Team All-American and the All-Southern Conference First Team because of his good performance . That season he scored three goals and gave as many assists.
In his sophomore year, Clark signed a Project 40 contract and thus got into the MLS SuperDraft 2003 .
Club career
Clark's professional career began when he was drafted as the 2nd pick in the first round of the 2003 SuperDrafts to the MetroStars . In his first year as a professional he made 28 league appearances, 27 of which he was on the grid. That season, he recorded one assist and three goals, with his first goal on August 26 in the game against Chicago Fire . He made his debut on April 12 in the game against the Columbus Crew , in which he was on the pitch for the full 90 minutes. With the team he reached the final of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2003 at the end of the season . Furthermore, Clark was in the final selection for the MLS Rookie of the Year Award this season , but in the end had to admit defeat to Damani Ralph of Chicago Fire. In the 2004 season Clark was in 26 championship games in action and came up with one goal and one assist.
Before the 2005 season, Clark moved to the San José Earthquakes for an allocation (a certain amount of money that is paid to a club in order to put a player of the respective club under contract with his own club) . In his only season with the Quakes , he was used in 30 games, scored three goals and made two assists. At the club from San José he formed a strong and playful duo together with Dwayne De Rosario . In December 2005, Clark traveled to Spain , where he trained with the players of the then second division Real Valladolid .
After the club moved to Houston and the previously received MLS Supporters' Shield , Clark and the rest of the team moved to the newly established Houston Dynamo . In the 2006 season he started in 31 of a total of 32 games, with a record of two hits and three assists and won the championship with the team after winning the last game, the MLS Cup . This season he drew attention for the first time with his sometimes aggressive style of play. The negative highlight from Clark's point of view in this case was the dismissal he got on August 26th in the 3-2 defeat against CD Chivas USA . The following season was partly similar to the previous one, with the only difference that Clark was in fewer league games on the field, as he increasingly came to appearances in the senior national team of the USA.
His aggressive behavior did not improve in the 2007 season either, which degenerated on September 30, 2007. In a scrum in the penalty area after a corner kick in the 89th minute of the match against FC Dallas , the Dallas player Carlos Ruiz jumped towards the ball because he wanted to clear it. He fell on Clark, who immediately got up and kicked the head of his opponent who was lying on the ground. The kick just missed Ruíz's head and hit his shoulder. As a result, Clark was immediately expelled from the field. On October 4th, Clark was banned from playing nine league games by the Major League Soccer Commission and was fined $ 10,000. In his 19 appearances this season, Clark scored two goals and came up with three assists again.
For the 2008 season , Clark was in 25 championship games in action, scored two goals and provided one assist. In the North American SuperLiga 2008 Clark was active in every game and reached the final with Houston, in which they lost to New England Revolution on penalties . In the 2009 season, Clark played in 22 championship games, scoring one goal and preparing one.
After his contract with MLS expired, Clark moved to the German Bundesliga for Eintracht Frankfurt on January 19, 2010 , where he signed a contract until the end of the 2009/10 season . He played his first competitive game for Frankfurt Eintracht on April 25, 2010 in the Rhein-Main Derby against 1. FSV Mainz 05 (3: 3). His contract was then extended to mid-2013. However, he could not prevail as a regular player. In the summer of 2011 he was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga with Eintracht . There, too, he was only used once in the first half of the 2011/12 season .
In the second half of the season Clark was awarded to the Norwegian first division club Stabæk Fotball for half a year . After his return to Frankfurt, his contract was terminated on July 30, 2012 by mutual agreement.
Clark returned to Houston Dynamo in August 2012 . On February 2, 2018, he moved to Columbus Crew within the league .
International
Clark has experience in various youth selections across the United States. For example, he made five appearances for the US U-20 team, for which he also took part in the 2003 Junior World Cup in Saudi Arabia . He made his debut in the senior national team on October 12, 2005 in the game against Panama . Clark scored his first and so far only international goal on July 2, 2007 in a match against Paraguay in the 2007 Copa America . He also played in the qualifying matches for the 2010 World Cup against Trinidad and Tobago and Guatemala . Clark also took part in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup , where he was sent off with a red card in his first game against Italy for a serious foul on Gennaro Gattuso . In the end, the Americans made it to the final of the Confederations Cup , where they narrowly defeated the Brazilian national team 3-2 after they had previously led 2-0.
After he was previously in the United States' provisional 30-man squad for the 2010 World Cup , Clark was appointed to the final 23-man squad of the USA on May 26, 2010 by national coach Bob Bradley and took part in the World Cup in South Africa part.
