Dwayne De Rosario OOnt (born May 15, 1978 in Scarborough , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian football player . His nickname is "DeRo". The midfielder last played for Toronto FC in Major League Soccer . With 22 goals, he is the record scorer of the Canadian national soccer team .

De Rosario is the son of Guyanese parents who emigrated to Canada.

Career

Club career

De Rosario began his professional career at Toronto Lynx in the A-League , where his later national team colleague Paul Stalteri also signed. After seven games and three goals, he left Toronto for Germany . From 1997 to 1999 he played at FSV Zwickau . But with the Saxons he could not prevail and then switched to the Richmond Kickers again in the A-League. In 2000, de Rosario became the star of the season with 15 goals.

In 2001 the Canadian coach Frank Yallop brought De Rosario to the San José Earthquakes as one of his first acts . By 2005 he completed 108 championship appearances for the Californians and scored 27 goals. His successes during that time include winning the MLS Cup in 2001, where he scored the decisive golden goal in the final, and in 2003. He also won the MLS Goal of the Year Award twice in a row (2004 and 2005).

For the 2006 season he followed the club in relocating to Houston . For Houston Dynamo he completed 78 games and scored 24 goals, winning the MLS Cup in 2006 and 2007. In the latter success he was like 2001 MVP of the finals. In 2006 he scored the only goal in the MLS All-Star Game against Chelsea .

For the 2008 season he moved back to his home country for Toronto FC . Dynamo received the player Julius James and a transfer fee. On March 21, 2009 he made his competitive debut. On April 8, 2010 he was appointed captain of the team.

On April 1, 2011, he moved to the New York Red Bulls . Tony Tchani and Danleigh Borman went to Toronto for this. After 13 games, New York De Rosario traded on June 27, 2011 for Dax McCarty of DC United. Because of his achievements, he was named the best player of the 2011 Major League Soccer season. He returned to Toronto FC in January 2014. In January 2015, De Rosario announced the end of his career on his Instagram page.

National team

With Canada's U-20 selection , he took part in the 1997 World Youth Championship .

From 1998 de Rosario played for the Canadian senior team . He played his first game on May 18, 1998 against Macedonia . His greatest success was winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2000 . On September 7, 2012, he scored his 20th international goal in a 1-0 win in World Cup qualification against Panama, making him the sole record scorer in his country.

Personal

De Rosario started a vegan diet in 1994, but has been eating fish again since 2004. Dwayne is married to Brandy Oyabunmi De Rosario, with whom he has 4 children. He is a cousin of the hurdler Priscilla Lopes-Schliep . His niece Maliah De Rosario (* 2001) is also a soccer player and currently plays for the maple leaves U-20. In 2018 De Rosario received the Order of Ontario , the highest civilian honor in his home province.
