The Richmond Kickers are an American football franchise of the United Soccer League based in Richmond , Virginia .
The Kickers were founded in 1993 and have been playing in the United Soccer League since 2011 , which is now the second highest league in the US league system . The home games are played in the City Stadium. The current coach is David Bulow, who has been the team's head coach since 2018.
history
The Kickers were founded in 1993 and played their first two seasons in the United States Interregional Soccer League, which at that time represented the third division of the USA. The home games were played on the grounds of the University of Richmond .
In 1995 the team achieved one of their greatest successes, winning the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup . The Kickers won the final against the El Paso Patriots 4-2 on penalties. In the same year the final of the play-offs in the USISL Premier League could be won. In 1997 the team moved to the USISL A-League, the second highest league in the country at the time.
In October 2005, the owners of the Richmond Kickers announced they would change from the USL First Division to the Second Division . This enabled the franchise to save costs and keep gaming operations going. In 2006 and 2009 the Kickers winners were play-offs in USL-2.
The team has played in the USL Professional Division since the 2011 season. In 2013 you could win the regular season here.
Since January 24, 2013, the Kickers are the official USL partner of DC United .

Since 1995, all Kickers home games have been played at the City Stadium in Richmond. The 22,000-seat stadium is located in the Carytown neighborhood off Virginia State Route 195. Between 1983 and 2010, the stadium was called University of Richmond Stadium. The City Stadium was built in 1929 and served the University of Richmond as a venue for their American football events until 2009 . In addition to the Kickers, the Richmond Kickers Destiny also play their home games here.
