The Rochester Rhinos are an American football franchise of the United Soccer League based in Rochester, New York .

Until 2009, the team played in the USL A-League or in the USL First Division . The team has been competing in the USL Pro and USL since 2011 . Winning the US Open Cup in 1999 and winning the United Soccer League in 2015 are among the greatest successes .

history

The team was founded in 1996 and was playing in the A-League at the time . In the very first season, the Rhinos reached both the final of the play-offs and the final of the US Open Cup. In the last final of the A-League, the team lost to the Seattle Sounders . In the cup, DC United were the better team.

In 1997 the A-League merged with the United Soccer Leagues . This resulted in the USL A-League, which was later renamed the USL First Division . The Rhinos were able to show their good performance in the first season and were among the best teams in the USL in the years to come. They were just as successful in the US Open Cup. In 1999 the team became cup winners, making the Rhinos the only team since 1996 that does not play in Major League Soccer that was able to make it.

The 2010 season the team played in the USSF Division 2 Professional League. The Rochester Rhinos have been part of the USL Pro since 2011.

On January 28, 2013, it was announced that the Rhinos would become the official USL Pro partner of the MLS New England Revolution franchise .

In the 2013 season, for the first time since the team was founded, they could not qualify for the play-offs.

Stadion

Since 2006 the Rhinos have been playing in the Capelli Sport Stadium (formerly PAETEC Park), a football-specific stadium. The stadium has 13,768 seats. Before the Capelli Sport Stadium was completed, the team played at Frontier Field.
